Re: Regiment DILLON at Turin, 1706

So, at the battle of Turin in 1706, the commander should have been Arthur Dillon,'' Comte de Dillon''. Or not? Yes. As stated above, Arthur Dillon commanded the regiment until he gave it to his son in 1730. I don't know if he was personally present at Turin (if he wasn't, then command dutie...

Re: Regiment DILLON at Turin, 1706

I found this on Wikipedia: The Dillon's Regiment (French: regiment of Dillon) was first raised in Ireland in 1688 by Theobald, 7th Viscount Dillon for the Jacobite side in the Williamite War. He was then killed at the Battle of Aughrim in 1691. The regiment went to France in May 1690 as part of Lord...

Re: Regiment DILLON at Turin, 1706

The colonels of this regiment were mostly O'Briens. The first was Daniel O'Brien, 4th Viscount Clare, he was succeeded on 18 June 1693 by Andrew Lee. I have him listed as acting colonel only. Richard Talbot, son of the Duke of Tyrconnel, became colonel on 25 August 1694; Andrew Lee became at that t...

Re: Regiment DILLON at Turin, 1706

According to Pierre Charrié, who remains the absolute authority on the subject of French military flags, Dillon had ordonnance flags with red and green quarters until 1730, then red and blue from 1730 until 1739, and finally red and black quarters from 1739 until 1791 ( Drapeaux et étendards du roi...

Re: Regiment DILLON at Turin, 1706

If *I* were painting the unit, I'd paint them with green facings, yes. But I would paint the drummer in the livery that Robert Hall provides, so they would be red too, but with drummer's lace (not sure where to put it, but around the cuffs, up and down the sleeves, the edges of the false sleeves if...

Re: Regiment DILLON at Turin, 1706

I would be skeptical of the reversed colors on Lee. The reference is to Condray rather than a contemporary source. That's not to say Condray is wrong, but it would be interesting to know if he actually has a contemporary source of just through in the wargamers street knowledge of musicians wearing ...

Regiment DILLON at Turin, 1706

Hello, in the book "Le Aquile ed i Gigli” (The Eagles and the Lilies), by G. Cerino Barone, dedicated to the siege and the battle of Turin on 7 September 1706, in the War of the Spanish Succession, in the Order of Battle of the French army under the command of the Duke of Orleans, I found mentioned ...

Re: Marlbourough's Trumpeter

The use of the lance for cavalry standards was indeed widespread, although they were shorter that the medieval lance. As can be seen above British and Prussian armies were still using them well after the middle of the 18th century. The French, Austrians and Swedes did, as well. In fact, assuming yo...

A bit later but definitely proof that this form of lance for cavalry standards was reasonably widespread
O.K., thank you very much.

Re: Marlbourough's Trumpeter

The Prussian cavalry in the seven years war were still using this form of lance for their standards http://www.grosser-generalstab.de/tafeln/knoe03/knoe03_46.jpg Hello Ben, many thanks! :D Very interesting, this is a further confirmation of the information that I had found for the previous period (...

Re: Marlbourough's Trumpeter

Hello Sergio, Thank you for sharing your photo's of your well painted Front Rank figures. I have never come across the medieval style flagpole during the WSS, but this doesn't mean that they didn't exist. :D I have my 3 Dragoon regiments carrying flagpoles that are painted Red for the Erbprinz drag...

Re: Marlbourough's Trumpeter & flagpole

Another question: flagpoles. I found it written that during the War of Spanish Succession Cavalry used the flagpoles that were in the shape of medioeval tournament lances. In the book of Fabio Fiorentin "A me i miei Dragoni" ("To me my Dragons"), I found some pictures of these flagploes, they actual...

Re: The Savoyan Army of Vittorio Amadeo II. 1689 - 1697

Miniature painted very well, I would say a masterpiece! Compliments! :D A question about the Ordinance flag (battalion) of the Regiment of Guards: Are you sure it was that one? What is your source? :?: From the information that I have found, it seems to me that the flag you have put it is those of t...

...Gunter, great website for French uniforms of the period, but it's British trumpeter's that Sergio was enquiring about. Best Wishes, Ray. should sometimes try to read more thorough. Sorry!
