Re: Jacobite?? Or not!

Motorway - Try as I might, I can't find any references to a Declaration of War by the United Dutch Provinces. Ref Jonathan Israel's article it seems that he has never seen the OOB of which the bulk were from the Anglo-Dutch Brigade (English Establishment, but paid for by the Dutch and thus still En...

Re: Help with WSS Brit Dragoon - Lloyd

Actually the regiment, together with another of dragoons, remained in England for the duration of the war. Detachments of both regiments served on various expeditions during the was. The 1702 expedition to Cadiz and Vigo has been mentioned. Lord Rivers' intended expedition to France is another. This...

Re: Jacobite?? Or not!

Judging from the popularity of the Jacobites, I might conclude they won the war  (Just as the popularity of anything Napoleon and anything German for 39-45 may vouch for a different turn in history).

Re: Status of the Scots Brigade in Dutch Service 1712

hello Edward,

The Papers illustrating the history of the Scots brigade in the service of the United Netherlands by James Ferguson mentions the withdrawal of the British troops from the Confederate army without anything particular regarding the six regiments of the Scots brigade.

Re: Grey Dragoons...

hello James, Just to add a few bits. The future Royal Scots Greys originate from 1678 when three companies (troops) of dragoons were raised. (It is of interest this coincided with the formation of several troops of horse, a regiment of foot (future Royal Scots Fusiliers) and some companies for polic...

Re: Royal Scots - grenadiers?

The regiment had at least one company of grenadiers in late 1688, but perhaps both each battalion had one company of grenadiers.
Don't know about headgear and such.

cheers,

Re: London

Not specifically related to the WSS, but the National Army Museum in Chelsea is quite nice. It is next to Chelsea Hospital were, obviously, a number of veterans were housed.

Re: Amsterdam

Though more related to the Guerre Hollande of 1672 - 78, the city of Naarden may be of interest for its fortifications. What I remember from childhood many years ago, there was a museum and some guns. It is not far from Amsterdam either. As indicated before, Delft is a real go. The city of Utrecht m...

Re: Regiment DILLON at Turin, 1706

The colonels of this regiment were mostly O'Briens. The first was Daniel O'Brien, 4th Viscount Clare, he was succeeded on 18 June 1693 by Andrew Lee. I have him listed as acting colonel only. Richard Talbot, son of the Duke of Tyrconnel, became colonel on 25 August 1694; Andrew Lee became at that ti...

Re: Books/internet links Duch Forces 1660-1721 uniforms and

Regarding links, you can always get a good start with http://www.milwiki.nl/dutchregiments/ this site is basically a copy of Ringoir's publication on the genealogy of the various regiments of the Dutch army (ab urbe condita, so to speak). http://rampjaar.blogspot.nl/ posts regularly on uniforms, fla...

Re: Irish Bits 1689 etc

hello Edward, Interesting question. The designation 2nd Regiment of Guards (or Foot Guards) is used predominantly in official papers during the WSS. The official designation after 1670 was Coldsteam Regiment of [Foot] Guards, or more fully her Majesty's/the King's Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards....

Re: Blenheim OOB

hi Ray, Thank you and I am happy my comments are found useful :) As to your questions, when settling precedence there was distinction between the Guards and non-Guards. The First Regiment of Guards always came first, followed by the Coldstream Regiment. For example, the Welsh Guards were formed only...

Re: Blenheim OOB

hi Gerry, As Ray replied, regiments of the British armed forces were not formally numbered before 1751. I just might add some further information. Precedence of regiments, the (more abstract) mechanism underlying numbering, is from a much earlier date. Precedence is probably as old as the ego of mal...
