Re: Russell's Horse

Holy thread necromancy Batman! @wdrenth I've been trying to find out what happened to Russell's/Delamere's Horse after the Boyne Campaign. They were a part of Douglas' command during the 1690 seige of Athlone but then they seen to disappear. I recalled your earlier post that suggested they were disb...

Re: Brigadier attached to destroyed unit

Nps JT It appears that I entirely missed that the unit was destroyed and not routed  . I'd say that in that circumstance the Brigadier is removed from play. Whether he is captured, killed or has miraculously escaped to fight another day is up to you but he has no more impact on the current bat...

Re: Brigadier attached to destroyed unit

Hi, Any attached character is forced to retreat along with the routing unit for one turn and can detach in the following turn. There doesn't seem to be the same risk to officers as there is for shooting. In melee there is a winner and a loser. I seem to remember that only the losing unit takes a mor...

Re: Russell's Horse

I think that James probably still had quite a bit of Protestant support until the trial of the seven Bishops. After that the die was cast and such Protestant support as he retained would have been among Tory Grandees and Scottish supporters of the Stewart divine right of rule. Anyhow, I digress...🙂 ...

Re: Russell's Horse

Just thinking that Ormonde was a Protestant Grandee if I am not mistaken. W9uld it be likely then that Protestant gentlemen might have gravitated to that particular regiment in the same way that the foot gravitated to Mountjoy et al?

Re: Russell's Horse

Excellent. That is that little mystery solved then. I wonder how much impact there was on the numbers of fighting men in the regiment after the Protestants were purged from the ranks. Similar foot regiments such as Mountjoy's and Forbes' (?) had as much as a third of their number being Protestant be...

Re: Russell's Horse

Thank you yes, it does. I was thinking that his original regiment might have been taken over by Sarsfield. Interestingly, just ike there are two Gustavus Hamilton's,there also appear to be potentially two Theodore Russell's. D'Alton's Irish Army of James II shows that a Theodore Russell was given a ...

Re: Russell's Horse

He was also given the colonelcy of Lord Delamere's regt of Horse as the incumbent Lord had been a political rather than a military appointment and once secure in England, William was doing his housekeeping. I think that this would have been early 1690 just after or possibly during the Dundalk Camp d...

Russell's Horse

After Tyrconnell removed Theodore Russell from his Colonelcy, what happened to his regiment of horse? Who took over as Colonel? Did they remain in Jacobite service? Was there a similar situation to Mountjoy and Forbes(?) where the regiment had a number of it's troops declare for the other side? Thanks

Re: Dragoons and Grenadiers

Thank you Barry. Dragoons are always classed as Loose Order and Grenadiers as Close order regardless of how they are based. That makes sense now and the choice of basing is simply down to the individual with no bearing on their order. Grenadiers are designated as Elite rather than going up a dIe typ...

Dragoons and Grenadiers

OK, so Dragoons and Grenadiers can be based in loose order as individual models or close order with 5 figs per stand for Dragoons or 6 figs per stand for Grenadiers. I have a couple of questions. Dragoons in Loose Order are harder to hit and move better over rough ground. They suffer from losing the...

Re: Battle of the Boyne questions

@JT_Brit. I'd love to see your Boyne set up. Our Boyne River would need to be a bit larger though as we are playing 60 figure battalions with roughly twice the frontage you mention. I think we are looking at as much at 12-14 feet for table size as we too want to include the Drybridge crossing. We (E...

Nps. Can I ask what number of figures per battalion you are using and their frontage?

Re: All or Nothing Charge

I don't know but I think that applying attrition to all squadrons might go some way to removing the 'All or Nothing charge' as a default formation.

As for the second question, I think that all squadrons pursue.

Re: Battle of the Boyne questions

Yes,the Horse and Foot were deployed as separate entities. I believe that Le Caillemotte was the Brigadier commanding the Huguenot foot at Oldbridge. All three battalions were involved in the crossing though Le Caillemotte's bore the brunt of the fighting. Le Caillemotte himself was injured and carr...
