Re: Latvia in GNW

I googled the title of the book and found a book dealer in Latvia. Can’t remember the name, but they seemed to be a pretty large operation. The postage was very reasonable, IIRC.

Re: German & other foreign regiments in Swedish pay

Probably not. The German regiments at Gadebusch, (Elbing and Stralsund regiments) did not.

Re: German & other foreign regiments in Swedish pay

Further, Hoglund says that the German regiment, also called the Bajerska regiment raised in 1706, probably wore blue. He also cites a letter from Rehnskiold dated July 22, 1706, which says that the three newly raised regiments and battalions were dressed in blue coats with blue, red and aurora linin...

Re: German & other foreign regiments in Swedish pay

Hoglund does not give any information on the uniforms of the Swiss and French regiments raised from soldiers in Saxon service following Fraustadt. Since the uniforms of the “Saxon” battalions also raised from Saxon prisoners were blue, and the whole army received new uniforms about that time, I woul...

Re: Did generals have uniforms?

Expect that this dignitary is supposed to be King Christian V of Denmark.

Re: Russian Uniforms

This is based on the Viskatov plate series of the early 19th Century. The info on the GNW is very much outdated, but the plates are nice, if inaccurate in many cases.

Re: Did cavalry use pistols in NYW?

The Swedish tactic at the Battle of Lund in 1676 was to charge with pistol in hand and fire when they could see “the whites of the enemy’s eyes.” The sword was then drawn in the melee. This was specifically referred to as “in the French manner.” Yes but the date when the Carolean reforms were intro...

Re: Did generals have uniforms?

Its true that many battle painters were not there, but van Meulen was painting for the king and probably wanted to get it right. I agree that many general officers may have worn a version of the uniform of regiments that they owned, and this is a good default to follow, absent any contradicting evid...

Re: Did generals have uniforms?

If you google paintings of Louis XIV by van Meulen, you will find numerous paintings of battles and sieges from the period, which show officers dress.

Re: Flag Size

As already said, the Saxon flags “in real life” were larger than the Swedish, Danish and Russian flags. I have my Swedish flags sized at 30mm on the hoist.
