Re: Flintlocks or Matchlocks for the boyne?

Toad, am just coming back after time away so will answer your questions more fully tonight (and also add my sixpence to another few posts). Ray (Churchill) - Deepest apologies, I've finished the Prussian comparison but not only am up to my neck in work and research, but the kids have only just gone ...

Ray,

will do - But, if I may ask, where did you get the regimental numbers that you quote ?

Regards,

Mike.

Re: Prussian Regiments during the NYW

Ray, the units listed are those that fought in the low countries. I mentioned Prinz Albrecht because although the unit is classed as Dutch its' presence in Ireland is the cause of one of the misnomers of the campaign, similar to the Danish "Fynske" regiment being recorded as being "Finnish" troops.....

Assuming you mean Alexander Cannon (as in the Killiekrankie campaign), then the troops in question are elements of Nicholas Purcell's dragoons. Unfortunately and as far as I'm aware there is little hard evidence as to how they were uniformed. Will check my records though, and if I find anything will...

Ray, it's down to bureaucracy and accountability*, which means that the French kept everything recorded and -in the main - filed. For the british the info is out there it's just that you have to dig that deeper. As an example am following up two promising leads on the Jacobites either of which may y...

Jim, will leave the wit to the other contributors, but quite simply you have no problem at all, and it does you credit that you thought you might have. Basically with the exception of the 'standing' units, the Jacobite army was equipped with kit drawn from French depots which was several years out o...

Have just re-checked Clifford Walton's History of the British Standing Army, and the good colonel states that on 23 April 1662 a warrant was issued at Westminster for the raising of "A regiment of our foot guards for Ireland" and that the warrant was effected in England, in other words the troops we...

Do You have Milne-Milne's "Standard's and Colours of the Army 1661-1881" ? Lee's quote comes from Sibbald Scott but in his detailed study, and having use dthe same quote about yellow taffey MM states that there is no record at all of which devices or badges were on the standard. He also adds that In...
