Jim, generally it was a buff colour, although I suppose like any leather it could in theory be dyed. Oddly enough (and I have to check with some people on this) the buff doesn't actually refer to the colour, but to the leather itself but over the years the term and the colour have become synonymous ...

Jim, it's basically a thick leather coat, sometimes with and sometimes without sleeves, made (IIRC) from ox leather (if at possible, despite the cost) or lesser quality material if ox not available.

Imagine ECW horse and that's roughly what you are looking at.

Jim's figures show exactly what my sources show. The main query seems to be as to the type of crown used (crown royal, crown imperial etc etc) - There are also many debates as to which harps are used in Irish flags... Flick, the colour in Lee's article refers to the unit raised by Charles II some th...

Barry,

source is "Danish Force in Ireland" by Danaher & Simms. The uniform does change during the Great Northern War to white/gris-mesle coat faced in orange. Am trying to tap my contacts in Denmark for more exact information on both sets of info.

Just a quick one, before I hit the sack - It's 2am and I have a 7th birthday party in a few hours. Have quickly rechecked things, and as at 1690/1 Prince George's Regt should be in white/gris-mesle faced in green. Obviously this is a little too early for the period you are after, but I'll chase up s...

Quick answer is that 1699+ Frederick IV is king of Denmark and so all standards are monogrammed for him. Are you looking at specific units/time frames ? Frederick rules until 1730 and so at least we can remain certain of flag design etc. Let me know the units (if your query is specific) and I'll see...

In the Aughrim narrative (as published by The History Press) I also updated by research on the danes and so this has a little bit more than the original Danaher and Simms work by the IMC. Am hoping to get to Copenhagen next year and if it can be arranged possible will be having a look at the origina...

The two plates by Soeren Henriksen used in the book are the Danish Footguards and the Fynske/Fünen regiment.

For my tuppence, I would go with Robert and Dan's views on this.
The IMC's "Danish Force in Ireland" gives a quick sketch of the uniform colours, which is good as a first stop. Which units are you thinking of ??

Concur with Iain - The three Irish units are infantry regiments on the French establishment whose creation from the earlier corps succeeded the dissolution of the "Army in Exile" after Ryswick.

It was a "typo" the unit is Infanterie Regt van Welderen, of which there are a few at various times. Can definitely state that the unit didn't fight in Ireland as in 1691 a van Welderen Regt was serving in Flanders.

Here we go then (but in no particular order) Royal Regt of Foot (Scots) - Flanders. Dumbarton's Regt (1st Batt) - Flanders. Dumbarton's Regt (2nd Batt) - Recruiting in Scotland. Charles Churchill's - Ireland (as Charles Trelawney's) John Granville, Earl of Bath's - Flanders (after reforming Dec 1688...

Hi Iain, am fine thanks but have been hiding lately as have been finishing two Ospreys (unfortunately out of period though - Colditz and Varus). Hopefully will soon be getting a commission from Osprey for a CAM series on the 1798 Irish Rising and one from The History Press on Cromwell's War with Spa...
