Rob,

Would you be willing to share the titles, etc. that contain uniform information for the 1660-1680 period?

I completely agree that there is a lack of accessible information on uniforms, colours and standards, and OOBs for this period, and what is there is usually not in English.

Regards,

Dan

De Quincy covers Walcourt in his , "Histoire Militaire du Regne de Louis le Grand Roy de France" Vol 2 pages 160-164. Quite interesting that Lynn does not mention the battle in his "Wars of Louis XIV 1667-1714". An oversight? Two orders of battle for the Dutch and their allies are here: http://www.d...

David,

To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing available in English on the Bavarians for this time period. This is true for many of the German States. I wish I could be of more help.

Ray,

I wish that I could be of help, but information on colours and standards for English and Scottish units in the WSS is a bit of a "black -" when it comes to details. The Triomphs Louis XIV contains nothing on the units you listed. Sorry.

Paul, The rule about white Colonel's colour is not absolute. There were exceptions, but for the most part white dominated. Also, the same motif on colonel's and company colours is also a general rule. For example, in the Danish Prinz Georg Regt, each company, including the colonel's, had a different...

Paul, In both the Dutch and Danish armies each company carried a colour. The Colonel's or Leib/ Liv Company's colour was usually white, while the colours of the other companies was colored. In 1709, the Danes went to only two colours per regiment. Whether or not the units in Flanders did this is unk...

David, The definitive study on the Bavarians is Karl Staudinger's "Geschichte des kurbayerischen Heeres unter Kurfürst Max II. Emanuel 1680-1726". München. 1904. I would have thought you would have received a reply by now. Information on drums is difficult to come by. The drum you describe was brass not gold and the cords would have been a buff color. For the most part, Hesse-Kassel drums had a wooden barrel or cylinder with the rims painted different colors...

Unsure what you mean by "bonnet". As for helmets, used by Imperial and Bavarian cuirassier at least early in the war. There might have been a few others.

Iain, All good stuff. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Could you elaborate further on the so-called "servants"? I believe these were the equivalent of the German "Knecht", and not only officers' servants, but also "boys" who were part of the regimental and company trains, assistants to the pro...
