Re: King James' Army

hi Phil, Being a 'publisher' author, I might shed some light on this :-) As a start, there is no Dalton type of work that lists all the regiments and commissions of James II's army in Ireland between 1689 and 1691. However, something can be derived from D'Alton's King James's Irish Army List 1689. T...

Re: Kurland Regiments in Dutch Service

There was a regiment of dragoons raised by the Duke of Kurland. This regiment became the Regiment Garde Dragonders later.

Re: count schombergs forces at the boyne

As Graf Bretlach pointed out, a regimental colonel had a multitude of roles. Often, and certainly for the guards, he was a person of importance who had something better to do than leading his regiment. Schomberg's dad, the Duke of Schomberg is another example. He was given the colonelcy of the Royal...

Re: count schombergs forces at the boyne

hi Ray, I was referring to English/Scots guards at the Boyne. Of course, the Scots Guards were busy in Flanders, and the Grenadiers/Coldstream were partially in Flanders as well, and partially doing duty in England. What is your reference for English guards in Piedmont? As far as I know there was no...

Re: count schombergs forces at the boyne

sorry should have put down that mitchelborn was colonel of st johns regiment. at the boyne. Michelburne's and St. John's were different regiments, both served at the Boyne. Both originate from the Londonderry garrison, and were regularized by Kirke in August 1689. Both stayed in Ireland after the t...

Re: count schombergs forces at the boyne

dear all, From my own notes, based on Walton's book, Story's contemporary impartial history, and an article from the Irish Sword. The 1DG, 2F, etc, denote a more modern identifier of the regiment most people will understand: Horse: 1st and 3rd troops of guards Garde du Corps (the Dutch troop of hors...

Re: count schombergs forces at the boyne

hello Graf Bretlach, You'll find a list of English/Irish regiments at the Boyne in the Boyne book may Mike McNally, also on this forum of course, and in my '1699 half-pay list'. There were no English guards at the Boyne, nor was there any Scots Guards present! This is an error popping up every now a...

Gents,

Please find a, hopefully good, scan of said page. Not all names are that clear, but should be solvable with a little research I think.

Re: OOB for French Forces at Landen/Neerwinden?

15 squadrons remain unidentified. These could be Dutch, Spanish or possibly Brandenburg. Do you have a copy of the plan after page 38 in d’Auvergne? As is usual with Google, my copy is folded. This might provide clues as to the identity of these 15 squadrons. Dan, My copy of d'Auvergne comes from t...

Re: OOB for French Forces at Landen/Neerwinden?

hello Graf Bretlach, That is indeed an interesting question! You will find biographies of the several Schombergs here: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Schomberg,_Frederick_Herman_%28DNB00%29 and http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Schomberg,_Meinhard_%28DNB00%29 It seems that Meinhard was not naturialised a...

Re: OOB for French Forces at Landen/Neerwinden?

hi Ray, Yes, those nobles with their multitude of titles! Meinhardt Schomberg, the eldest son of Frederick Schomberg, was created Duke of Leinster in 1691. This was a reward for his services in Ireland (Boyne and Limerick). Charles Schomberg, the younger son of Frederick Schomberg, succeeded his fat...

Re: OOB for French Forces at Landen/Neerwinden?

Graf Bretlach,

The OOB's given in Walton, and d'Auvergne, are usually the regiments present in the army at the opening of the campaign. Not all would form part of the actual forces engaged at battles, being in garrison for example.

Look forward seeing your website.

Re: OOB for French Forces at Landen/Neerwinden?

I have compiled a list of regiments from the British isles on my blog: http://britisharmylineages.blogspot.nl/2012/05/battle-of-neerwinden-29-july-1693.html Graf Bretlach came with the question if the Duke of Leinster's Regiment (future 7th Dragoon Guards) shouldn't be there. This regiment was part ...
