Re: Pike 'rot' - fact or fiction?

I thought it was a well known fact that some troops pikes were longer then others :?: Some just had bigger spear heads at the end. I wonder if they were trying 'tactically' to make up for something.

Does it really matter how long a mans pike is, should thickness also count.

Cheers

Re: Help with a ruling needed please!

Interesting situation, For your mounted charge example, it makes sense to me. After all in BLB2 a sqn of six figures can also be considered a pair of sqns. Not sure what you mean in regards to your Blenheim example. Isn't it apples and oranges from above? A dismounted battalion behind cover engaged ...

Re: Composition of the English/Scots and Jacobite Regiments

Hello trojan58au From what I have read/research for the Glorious Revolution and follow on campaigns in Ireland and Scotland this is what I think: Established English regiments matchlocks with pike but transitioning to flintlock. May be based on seniority with the exception of the Royal Fusiliers who...

Re: So how do you design an army

It's the scale of the thing  It is a very interesting discussion. For BLB2 Barry and Co recommend for a balanced force it should have a figure ratio of one cavalry figure for every two infantry figures or two cavalry sqns for one infantry battalion. However in Ireland there would be less horse...

Re: Regiments without pikes

Hi Gunter,

In regards to the chevaux de crises, how do you score them on the tabletop within a war game rules set (BTLB2?).

Tiffin's Regiment of Foot spoted in Quebec, Canada!

I am here at the Royal Military Collage of Canada's campus in St Jean, Quebec attending my Intermediate Leadership Course, which is a course for Canadian Armed Forces WO's & PO's. In the Vieux Mess, which is the WO's & Snr NCO's drinking mess, along the main hallway on the walls are water paintings ...

Re: Dragoons in Nine Years War

In the case of British Cavalry for the WSS, they had two or three charges of powder issue for their pistols for picket duty.

Re: Dragoons in Nine Years War

Hello maciek Not quite reverted. They did it all the time. They used mix of cold steel and pistol fire in melee. IIRC I have read on this board and several others, along with a few written sources the theory that the decline of French Cavalry from the 9YW to WSS was bacause they used the pistol more...

Re: Dragoons in Nine Years War

I believe in the French Army in the earlier period their was some debate to the sword vrs pistol and but my theory is the tactical circumstance would dictate. In the Nine Years War, French Cavalry was superb. At Neerwinden in 1693 French Cavalry at the charge with sword carried breastworks covered b...

Re: Dragoons in Nine Years War

Currently reading John Childs The Williamite Wars in Ireland 1688-1691 in anticipation of Barry's & co Ireland supplements. :!: The campaign in Ireland saw great use of dragoons, from sizing fortified estates and river crossings, to rearguards and battlefield action, to the actions of ambushes and c...

Re: Dragoons in Nine Years War

Tongue in cheek, The period dragoons by the time of the Napoleonic Wars have evolve into cavalry proper. The British Army considered them heavy cavalry while other countries considered them a medium cavalry, their horses in size between light and heavy regiments. However even Napoleon employed...
