Re: German states: Dates of flintlock adoption?

Would militias have kept the matchlock and pike for a while after the regular army switched the flintlock and bayonet?

Re: English/Dutch cuirassiers in NYW?

Re: Papal and Italian States 1660 to 1721

According to the Army of the Duke of Savoy, from 1670 the Savoyard regiments mostly wore white-grey coats with various cuff/lining colours, including yellow for the Saluzzo regiment. The Genevois dragoon regiment wore green coats with red cuffs, the Sa Altesse Reale dragoons wore redcoats with blue ...

When did Spain adopt the flintlock?

Did Spain use mostly matchlock or flintlock muskets in the Nine Years War? I have the ebook on "The Spanish Army in the War of the Grand Alliance" but it doesn't mention this.

Also what uniforms if any did their artillery wear?

Re: The Army of James II (Helion)

Do you have a source for the statement is was disbanded because of particular ties to James II? By the way, by 1688 this regiment had ceased to be a maritime regiment for many years. It was indeed raised as part of the Naval Establishment, but was put on the military establishment (the Guards and G...

Re: The Army of James II (Helion)

[ I have a book on this but at the moment I have lost it. King William abolished James II's regiment the "Lord Admiral's Maritime Regiment" because of its historical ties to James II. Re: The Army of James II (Helion)

Just general uniforms for the nine years war and Ireland. I do have the Army of Louis XIV so that is a start. The Osprey book on the British Army is tempting. I have a book on this but at the moment I have lost it. King William abolished James II's regiment the "Lord Admiral's Maritime Regiment" be...

Re: The Army of James II (Helion)

If you are looking for uniforms I recommend Ospreys books, Pinterest app/website and the Vinhuizen collection website. Are there any uniforms in particular you are looking for information about?

Re: The Army of James II (Helion)

Apparently the first regimental-guns (artillery attached to regiments) were introduced in the English army during this king's reign - two 3-pounders for each of the seven regiments (of one battalion each) encamped in Hyde Park in 1686.

Re: The Army of James II (Helion)

The simple answer is Yes, the background detail is still valid in regard to equipment, tactics and regimental makeup etc, there is unfortunately very little available information of the state of the English establishment from the abdication of James II until the army was sent to Ireland under Willi...

Re: Stradiots and Javelin armed cavalry in TYW ?

The Army of Flanders kept lancers until 1640. The Stradiots were still around, but as for mounted crossbowmen I haven't found evidence of that. However Catalan soldiers included crossbow infantry in the early 1600s (at least rebel ones) according to recently released minituras canovas plates. Also i...

Re: Saxon tactical formations during TYW

I have a copy of the book on the Saxon army in the 30 yrs war. The Saxon pikemen seem to not have worne helmets but did have at least front breastplates and tassets (hip guards). Officers sashes were yellow. The artillery was comprised of six 12 pounders, 12 six-pounders and associated artillery par...

Re: The Bavarian Army During the Thirty Years War, 1618-1648

I would refer to Pieter Snayer's painting of the Battle of White Mountain ( images from it are here), at which (I think?) he was personally present. Bavarians seem to be wearing Spanish style tabard cassacks (some dark blue), while officers wear buff coats with dark blue (almost sea blue) sashes. Th...
