The Naval museum was worth a visit but I haven't been there for about 20 years.

Delft isn't too far from Amsterdam by train and the Dutch National Military Museum is well worth a look.
In fact most places aren't too far away in the Neatherlands.

Thank Dave. I will give the ship (sheep) museum a look then. Saw the military museum in Delft some years back (I think it has been relocated to Utrecht inthe meantime.)

Adam, Harlem isn't very far from Amsterdam either and the Frans Hals gallery is well worth a visit for those paintings of the Night Watch etc, but some of those might have been relocated to the Reichs Museum in Amsterdam which is also a great place to visit. It used to have a great armour collection when I was last there.
Cheers

Hi it was many years ago but when I went to Amsterdam I took a day trip to Arhnem and went to visit the museum that was situated just outside of Arhnem - I think it was called Osterbrook(may be wrong)it was the base where the paras were.
Also there was lots in Amsterdam-Anne Frank museum, etc.Bought my Berlitz and Fodors guide when I went there-very useful.
Have a great time.

The Army Museum re-located from Delft to Soesterberg
(https://www.nmm.nl/)
If you are interested in 1939-1945, the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek, just west of Arnhem, is worth a visit. Just east of Nijmegen is Groesbeek, with another Market Garden related museum. Further south there is the Dutch War and Resistance Museum at Overloon, the location of heavy fighting in late 1944 (though the official war history devotes only the proverbial footnote to it).

If you like fortresses in Vauban style, Naarden is close to Amsterdam andl has the look and feel of an old fortified town.

Amsterdam has of course plenty of museums, and nearby Haarlem is like Amsterdam but smaller and without the million or so tourists :)

Thanks for all your suggestions. Too much to see in a short week so I will definitely return. I would recommend the exhibitions at the Amsterdam arm of the Hermitage museum. A treat to see French and Russian Napoleonic uniforms up close.
