I have been working on a variant of the Republic to Empire concepts for the ACW. If there are any gaming groups out there who might want to be involved in playtesting please get in touch via

wordtwister@hotmail.co.uk

cheers

Thanks Jim. You ARE in! I'll send some stuff soon. Knowing R2E as you do I think all of the logic will be clear.

The text has been higely thinned down and a lot of the Napoleonic naunce has come out obviously.

The main mechanical similarities are in:

Orders (but not all the same)
Command and cointrol
Exploitation
Firing
Combat
Morale

The big differences are in:

Unit and brigade construction
Formations
Troops classification
Weapon types and ranges
Some new stuff.

I have been working on this for a while as ACW has always been an interest of mine. What prompted the real work was actually the Crimea... having done a fair bit of research and trying mechanisms I realised that the transition point for any change to R2E was NOT 1854. R2E can play almost unaltered for the Crimea except a little bit around rifling, artillery and cavalry classification (Light and Heavy diffferentiation is not necessary)> The real transition point is probably about 1861 or 1862.

The ACW version.. still to be named, is positively anorexic compare to Naps but the games I have played so far are fast and bloody... just like you like 'em in Dumfries!!

Barry,

Although not a wargaming group as such, I can certainly offer you a point of view from someone who knows RtE and has played copious amounts of ACW rules from Fire & Fury and Johnny Reb III way back to Donald Featherstone's rules in his 1962 book. I can also proof read should you so wish.

Regards,

Jim

I finally sent the draft Rev1 version of the as yet un named ACW verrsion of R2E out to Dumfries, the US, Ayrshire and that bandit country east of Edinburgh!
We'll see what comments come back when you chaps get round to playing/throwing dice.

For R2E players the adjustments should be minimal in terms of understanding.

Barry,

I know its a bit late to ask

I' m not quite a group either but I would be interested in these ACW Rules too. Ol' Granny is a longtime area of interest for me. Played after Johnny Reb-Rules for many Years I would love to see a comeback and this seems to be the best way for it.

The words of H.Guderian prescribe all my wargame ambitions best:
"Nicht kleckern, Klotzen!" (Boot'em, don't spatter'em!)

Best Wishes

Günter

Darrell,

It's true. When I lived in Papua New Guinea I bought up the last of their production when Foundry first discontinued this line; the airmail postage to PNG was nearly as much as the figures. Ah, them were the days...

Jim

All I know about General Lee is that he was soundly whipped in the field by Yankees!

Now now Joe! steady!... what is all this dissent? Living deep deep in the South (almost in Mexico! )..

Gunter, no problems with you getting in on the play test action. I was talking to some of the guys about it yesterday. The ideas and evolutions have been coming thick and fast so I will clean up the latest version and get ot out to all of the groups.
I have also been working on the Crimean version.

the Crimean version is probably about 5-10% different from the Naps version.
The ACW version is 30-40% different with new mechanisms particularly in the areas of
formations, artillery, shooting, resolve and cavalry. Quite excited about these now!

I'll toss my hat into the ring.

I can proofread, suggest and see if the gaming group wants to give playtesting a go. We don't have a lot of ACW minis, but cardboard is cheap and we're squirrely and have lots of people who can find - in the rules!
