I would concur regarding the rules Dave.

I've not bonded with Black Powder. Not a 'bad' set of rules by any means (and I do play them from time to time with friends who like them), but for me there's something about the BP gaming experience that is strangely unsatisfying.

And yet, despite the obvious system similarities between the them, I too have discovered that while I might not be very keen on BP - I rather like Hail Caesar!

Rick Priestley's ideas seem better suited to the pre-gunpowder eras IMO, and Hail Caesar produces a good, fast flowing ancients game.

(Really enjoying your blog by the way...)

Glad you like the blog, we are fighting the next part of the battle next thursday when the Macedonians have to actually get the Virgins to their boats before more Persian reinforcements can arrive. Pics and report will be posted on my blog.

Great battlerep. I really like Hail Caesar for Ancients and have had some really good games.

James, Tom and I are going to start playing some 'Hail Cid' soon with our many and various 11th C Iberian Peninsular armies.

The guys that I gamed with have decided to use one Impetus sized base as a unit for HC, this is a bit small for my taste as I like bigger units so for the next game we are going to use two Impetus bases as a unit so we will see if that changes how the rules work. Hopefully they will work just as well and look even more impressive with the bigger units.

I rather like the warlord games rules. I've played all of them several times. The one thing I would say is that they are by far better when you are playing with multiple players ..... Of a like mind. We,ve had a few really excellent games.
The new pike and Shotte are actually better for Marlburian than black powder. Barry will be in a slight quandary as he actually did the Louis xiv stuff in pike ans Shotte.
Hail Caesar has got me playing ancients after 25 year gap

It's Warhammer Ancients that did it for me, all my previous games all those years ago were using WRG 6th edition. I still like the Warhammer rules but they seem to have fallen out of favour mainly due to GW's apathy towards their own product. I personally feel that the Warhammer ones work better for Dark Ages than main stream ancients because there is too much influence of characters for say Greeks or Romans.

Very colourful great painting, i love the B.P. rules, i would say they are much better to use the rules if you have large battles because you will get a result at the end of the evening, H.C. rules are very good as well..both sets of simple rules and the games flow well and you can mess around with the rules adding bits here and there.Like the blog Dave

Glad you like the blog Malc, it has given me an incentive to paint and wargame so that I can post articles. Apart from our League of Gentelmen Wargames weekends I was starting to become a bit of a wargames recluse but now getting my priorities sorted out.
Cheers

Just a couple, Skirmish Battles of the American War of Independence, Chevauchee a set of war games rules for the Hundred Years War both of which are still on sale from Caliver. I've also had a number of articles published over the years is Miniature Wargames, Wargames Illustrated and 18th Century Notes and Queries. Lately most of my writing has been with Barry for R2E and now quite a lot for Four Empires.

The second installment of our battle has now been added to my blog.
We used slightly bigger units this time and infantry units were now two Impetus sized bases which looked slightly better and the rules worked very well again and so far I haven't seen any major flaws in the rules and everyone seems to be picking them up quite easily.
