Norse Beserker 'Winter' Basing

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

Norse Beserker 'Winter' Basing

Post by Atheling » Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:51 pm

Hi,

After messing around with fake snow etc and after some experimentation I decided that it may well look better if were to start with a very dark brown for the base colour and then highlight up to a medium brown. Then it would just a matter of applying a couple of shades of 'white' and hey presto, I think I may have cracked it- a nice frosty looking base......

One question though, i get the feeling that it needs more 'white', does anyone agree? I'd be very interested to hear what you guys think :?: :?:

Really nice job...!!!

With regards your question....does it need more white...?, if it's a 'mid winter' feel you want, then for me it needs more white...

....however, as it is, (in my opinion) it makes a great 'winter frost feel' rather than 'snowy' feel....but I like that as I'm not sure if sometimes 'snowy bases' can look a little wedding cakey.

Depends what you're after.......but I really like it and if you feel inclined a 'walk through' would be nice, as I fancy doing it for some Ancient Germans I'm doing....

Looks wintry to me, one of those days where it's cold but not warm enough for snow as we have in Scotland. I think it is just right.

I agree about the fake snow. I was going for the frosty look but it's all very much a balancing act. If I add too much miniature may be over whelmed. Too little and it looks like an erreur extraordinaire!

I might well do that as I want to try it out on some other bases as there's an army to re-base!

Cheers,
Darrell.
