74th Highlanders

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

74th Highlanders

Post by quindia » Fri Sep 18, 2009 2:58 am

We are very, very, very close to finishing R2E. I've actually had a few days with nothing to do waiting for my world traveling partner to get back home so he can send me the last few photos...

I took the opportunity to assemble another battalion for my Peninsular Allied army. Mixing parts from a Victrix Peninsular infantry box and the new Highland infantry box, I'm going to add the 74th Highlanders to my growing 3rd Division, circa 1810. The unit seems to have been a little understrength at the time so it will only be 24 models strong for now.

I assembled the battalion yesterday and painted these today...

I've reverted to my black undercoat and dispensed with the Quickshade. My experiments with the stuff turned out pretty good, but they just don't look like my models! I paint fairly quickly and anyway what's the rush? These models lack the weather and grime that I prefer these days, but I tend to apply those effects to the entire unit just before basing.

Stay tuned...

Switched to more of a WIP style. I will post good pics of the finished unit, but the next few are for 'real time' progress...

Would have these guys finished yesterday, but Barry interrupted me... WITH THE LAST PHOTOS FOR REPUBLIC TO EMPIRE!!! A few loose ends to tie up and this thing is off to the printer!

Anyway, here's my complete 74th. Not a great photo, but I'll post a couple of proper pics, based and with the flags, in a couple of days...

A battalion, albeit a relatively small one, in 10 ten days!

Nice, I'm looking forward to getting some of these plastics myself. Have you painted any Perry's, will they mix?

Yes, The Perry's are a very good match. They are slightly slimmer and have finer details. The Perry models are also largely single cast, though there are some variations with separate arms.

I love both sets and will have no problem fielding units together.

Comparison pic here.
Vectrix take longer to build up and in my experience and are more brittle than the Perry offerings.
