Napolenic Russians - 7th Infantry Division ~ 1812 50% Done

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

Napolenic Russians - 7th Infantry Division ~ 1812 50% Done

Post by Greystreak » Sun Aug 14, 2011 1:44 pm

Some folks have recently asked for larger, ‘collection’ size photos of my Napoleonic Russian project (thus far), as I’ve recently finished the first half of the planned 7th Infantry Division (VI Corps). There isn’t that much to see by the standards of the readers of this Forum—only six formed infantry battalions, a battion of skirmishers, a 12-pdr Position battery, a couple of supporting dragoon regiments, and some leaders—about 300 figures in all. (Small beans compared to the collections of many on this forum, I appreciate.) I'll need to paint the same again in order to complete the Division, plus an additional 6-pdr battery . . .

So, for what its worth, here’s my little collection deployed in the back garden:

What your force may lack in quantity it MORE than makes up for in quality!

Thats superb! Excellently painted figures, some nice conversions (especially the wounded dragoon standard bearer) and beautiful photo composition.

You've got a LOT to be proud of, there!

Absolutely beautiful. I'm not sure if you mentioned this before but what manufacturer are those figures from?

Bryce,

You know you are a dyed-in-the-wool wargamer when sights like that give you a warm fuzzy feeling. There's nothing like seeing them all ranked up. I look forward to "inspecting" the whole division when it's done and, hopefully, playng against it one day with my 1808 French division which has not quite reached the fifty percent mark.

Looking great!

18th Century Guy: they are all Wargames Foundry 28mm, sculpted by Alan Perry (whilst still an employee).

I echo what they have all said Bryce, but surely your not going to stop at just a division??? What sort of Russian wargamer are you? you need at least a Corps.

Meglomania seems to have set in with my collection as my 1st division is just one battalion short plus I have started on the second division for the Corps then got carried away and started a seperate grenadier division, just finished the last squadron of cavalry for my Dragoon Brigade and added some Cossacks as a diversion from painting green plus there is an awfully big lead mountain sitting under my desk.

Barry the 'teddy bear fur' groundcover is not my work, but a club-mate's (David Norris), who agreed to loan me this for the photo shoot. He says the 'fur' (purchased in a massive 15m roll from a shop in Birmingham) was actually a brown/gold colour called 'Wolf Brown', to which he then applied the green paint with a garden 'mister' bottle. Once the paint was nearly dry (outside in the sunshine), he brushed it out until the appearance reached the colour 'mix' he was looking for.

Very nice... what is a 'mister' bottle?

"Mist" = "Spray" bottle, as in a refillable weedsprayer type, according to the man. Just basic acrylic 'craft paint', in proportions of 20% paint and 80% water, then sprayed all over--being sure to wash out the spray bottle before the gunk dries and clogs the nozzle.

I suppose you could try dying the normal fur and see how it works out or perhaps they sell it in other colours?

Barry, Colin has a friend that works in a fabric shop which is where he got his from, contact him and see if he can find out if they have other colours.

Hmm, yes..

Bryce, English is a curious language.. I looked at the word and thought of it in the context of MISTER O'BRIEN (Mr being his Court appearance title  ) as opposed to mister in the context of window demister....

Haha....

Dave, I liked the over brush look with the green and golden brown contrasting. Very natural. The fur could be cut and stuck to sculpted boards giving a very lush and realistic look.
