Raifs Afrikakorps

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

Raifs Afrikakorps

Post by raif » Fri Jan 23, 2015 9:25 am

I have to do something different. So i started with a German Africa Korps-List for the ruleset Operation Squad. The advantage for me, you don't need much miniatures. With 10 to 12 Figures you can play a really nice game.

First i painted a testfigure to find out, which colors and paints are suitable for painting Uniforms for the Afrikakorps. At the end of the Test-Mini i had a List of paints which i would use for the further paintings.

Image

Here is the result of the first testmini.

More pics of the Mini and what paints and pigments i used you can find on the blog.

In the meantime i could finish two further grenadiers - Hans and Guenther.

Image

For these two guys i used other Colors from my painting-sheet for the trousers and the jackets. I like the results of the difference colors. For the equipments i use always the same colors to simulate the uniformity of the unit.

here are much more pics from the two soldiers.

Test swatches of your paint colours, their shadows and highlights are an excellent way to go, Raif. I made my 'test swatches' by painting over the top of the black gesso undercoat I normally use to start my figures, to be sure I was getting a good 'match' with the final results expected.

In the last days i worked on the bases for Johannes, Horst, Hans und Günther. What i learned is, that i need more time to study how to work with pigments. ;D

Image

More pics of the single bases are - as always - on my blog.

So, it's time for the first weathering steps - i ever did. i never before works with ak interactive enamel tools. but it's really funny to handle white spirit and oil washes and others.

at this stage i used dak filter and dak wash from ak interactive and the look of the opel blitz changed dramatically.

Thanks god, in the last days the temperatures drops in the attic. So finally i could use my paintdesk again. :-) I could finish two miniatures - Karl-Gustav - the seargent of my troup and Georg a further grenadier.

Image

btw. for the photos of the two boys i used the first time a own photobackground. I guess it was a step forward to achieve a better photoquality.

More Pictures - with the new background - you can find on my blog.

Here comes Gerhard - the sniper of my Operation Squad Team. For the next time it will be the last WWII-Figure i will paint. It's time to paint more Dark Age Figures for my SAGA-Armies :D

Image

As i was not able to find a adequate miniature for a DAK Sniper i choose this plastic miniature from the perry DAK-Box. I hope you like Gerhard.

More pics of Gerhard you will find on the blog.
