Senatus Populus Que Romanus

I've got biten by the ancients bug again and purchased a box of Victrix's Republican Romans at the Tactica Wargames show in Hamburg. Although being a long time conservative "no Plastics"-Advocat, I have to confess that these minis are great and really nice to paint.
I've already put some of the Velites together and have started painting one of them for a test of which colors I 'll use on them.

Indeed they are! They're really crisp and tell you were to put on the paint. So if you'll get tempted doing ancients I can really recommend the Victrix stuff. :!:

He looks great Marc, if I had time I could certainly get back into ancients with the Victrix Greeks.

You might be even more tempted once we get together for a game.

Nice job. It's funny, I literally just ordered a handful of Crusader Romans and Carthaginians a few days ago with an eye toward building some Punic War skirmish forces... DONNYBROOK B.C.

I look forward to seeing more!

Thank you Clarence :D
Yeah, it seems that Republican Romans are pretty popular these days

Apart from the shields I already had finished the Velites a month ago.
So, now the last days I was in the mood to get the shields ready by applying those nice LBM decals which I've ordered from Victrix.

We've had a large number of good games using Hail Caesar and more recently "to the strongest"

Piquet's Archon 2 works quite nicely at representing the Republican Romans. During the normal melee resolution when the loser of a melee routs or retires (or occasionally it is a draw,) the Roman general can choose to replace a defeated Roman infantry unit with its supporting Hastati, Princeps or Triari unit. Alternatively the choice can be made to withdraw the entire line of a legion and replace it with its supporting line in the triplex acies formation. This gives a very powerful motive for a player to use the historical formation for a legion rather than extending his frontage with the rear lines which can be a temptation. (It also comes in very handy when blood-crazed Kelts have punched through your carefully arranged battle line! :o )
