Progress on Wargames Factory WSS plastic infantry

Post by simon boulton » Fri Apr 16, 2010 12:28 pm

The Wargeames Factory forum has got some new pics of a work in progress infantryman from the WSS. Looks very promising and they are now thinking about doing parts for command figures too.

Has got me excited about this period again, off to Triples tomorrow to get some Front Rank generals and the non generic cavalry

The intention is to produce a "generic" WSS infantry figure with several head gear options included on the sprue.

Something that will pass in dim light for most nations, although details will not be correct.

My personal hope is that they are able to include heads in karpus, and pikes allowing for GNW troops as well.

So it is for every nation and none in particular.

I'm not so sure if I like the 'generic' figure approach. I've seen that from Old Gory (Glory) and it didnt' work out to well in my opinion but each to their own.

there's something to be said for reducing SKUs that retailers need to stock (one of the arguments for collectable games), or streamlining production so that one expensive mold does the work of two.

On the flip side, if no-one buys it you're going to lose money.

Might be okay for the Russians but didn't the Swedes have turnbacks on the skirts of the coat? Shame because I wouldn't have minded doing the GNW.

The picture keeps changing address as they make amendments I think, so best just to go to the website forum and look under 18th century submissions and then WSS generic infantryman

Whilst a generic figure might not be totally accurate for all the nations in the WSS, there close enough for many I think. Shouldn't it be ok for French, Dutch, Prussians and Austrians etc depending on headgear?
Might also help to attract some people (like me) who wanted to do this period in 28mm but have been put off by the cost of the metal figures. If they sell enough of the infantry then the Cavalry are due to follow. With the current cost of a 28mm cavalryman running at £2.50 to £4.00, there is a significant saving to be made there.

Simon,

I agree with your premise that by driving down the cost of the figure you might bring more people into the period. But based on how they create these figures it should be something akin to a flick of the wrist. All of these figures are generated on a computer via software. I've seen their process and one selling point is how quickly they can make changes since it a file versus a green. I was expecting so much more than this and much sooner too.

But nonetheless, it just might be a good step forward as the price could drop and range of uniforms might increase and this would be a good thing.

Yes, it has been a long time coming. I understand their hoping for a summer release now though.

Think its gonna be a case of the more they sell the more we will see. Am I write in thinking that the cost issue with plastic figures is the mould?
