We think about using BlB for our Dutch war demo next year.
But the pike-musket ration is 1-2, so we think to use a central pike element with 2 flanking musket elements.
Are there any additions-changes to the BlB rules suggested. Eg I think that firing should be less effective, maybe hand tot hand stronger etc.
greetings

Hi Jan,
the configuration you mentioned is already part of the rules for Militia units (ie two 'wings' of muskets and central stand of pikes).
Although BLB 2 is not yet out the troops for the Dutch Wars would be classified as 'Rank firing' Foot and thus would be allowed to charge 'UNSHAKEN' enemy Foot.. a real advantage and this will change the feel of infantry combat.
BLB 2 will cater for these situations in detail but these suggestions should help in the short term
Good luck!

Barry,
thanks for the answer, will look into them.
I did know that the "militia" organisation was suitable but the consequences to firing and H2H combat wasn't clear to me.
Of course the question: when will LB2 come out?
As always we must plan ahead as our "club" consists only of two, so painting and terrainmaking take a lot of time; the demo will be at the Antwerp crisis show of 2011
greetings

Did the French and Dutch Armies during the Dutch War began to have their regiments wearing standard uniforms at this time?

For our 1672 troops we will using 18 figs batt or 3 bases (1 pike flanked by 2 musket). But we are getting problems with our pike base as the command has also go on this. With 2 flags, officer and probably drummer there is only room for 2 pikes.
Any suggestion to solve this?
We are thinking about bases of 60*50 or 60*60; also what's best. On this moment we have Dixon and Foundry figures but any additions will come from copplestone.

Regarding the uniforms, we are now trying to find information about the uniforms worn during this period but there is very few to find.
Some snippets about French and Dutch uniforms but probably we will have to use later uniform information and predate it (reversing colour for pikes and officers etc) so a little guessing and making up will be necessary.
What information we will have we will publish on our site (
www.aldegarde.nl) and we hope to present our game at the 2011 Crisis show at Antwerp. As there are only two of us in the "club" we have to plan ahead a long time.

Hi Jan,
I use
Copplestone figures and they are far larger than the equivalent Foundry, so you may have to be a wee bit careful there.
I use
Flames of War bases which are 65mm x 50mm with the 50mm as the front edge. I base three pikemen on a medium sized base 32.5mm x 50mm and stick it behind the middle one. This may work for you.
With warmest regards,
Jim

Jim,
thanks for the info. New food for thought about basing.
We know that the Copplestone are bigger but in seperate units they maybe fit. But we think they are far better suitable for the 1672-1678 period than the Dixon/Foundry. But you re of course right, the height difference is big.
greetings and thanks

I think in separate units they will look fine. I used to worry about these differences, but they only are really noticeable standing side by side in your figure case. At Historicon this year, I fielded armies made of Victrix, Perry, Foundry, Front Rank, and Eureka. With the exception of a few Victrix/Perry plastics and conversions, all were in units comprised of one manufacturer.
Once they were on the table, the differences vanished...

Clarence,
thanks. I think you are right.
We had one medieval demo with figures from various manufacturers (Foundry, very old B&B etc). But on the table they didn't look out of place

60 x 60 is fine Jan. I have literally just walked back into the house after completing the basing of a French unit on 60 x 60.. photo after tea I hope

Jan,
I've been giving this some more thought. I sometimes base my drummers, sergeants and officers on the "wings" where they add a bit of variety to the musketeers as seen below:

Jim
