BLB Demo game, suggestions welcome

Post by Justin Penwith » Thu Jun 30, 2011 7:53 pm

I have volunteered to run a few demonstration/participation games at a mini-con that my club is putting on in early November. One of the games will be BLB (Grand Armee is the the other) and I plant to run 2 two hour sessions.

Any recommendations for a scenario that can handle 4 to 8 players?

I am building the terrain table myself, as I used to make them for GW retail shops, but I want to have a fairly open table so no player is bogged down too much by terrain.

I am looking for any other helpful suggestions from those who have run such games of BLB before.

There are a couple scenarios in thw Warchest for the period, also look here http://www.leagueofaugsburg.com/fightin ... f=6&t=2755for shots of a game I ran at Recon. I have all the info on it if you want to try it. That forum also has several games others have ran as well.

Sure, I will give it a go.

What were the labels for; I cannot tell from the pics.

Did you create brigade rosters for each player?

Does BLB2 play as fast as BLB1? I was thinking of running BLB1 as a "fast-play" variant of BLB2, but will wait to decide until after I get a copy of BLB2.

The mini-con is for generating interest in historical wargaming in this area, as opposed to running games for our mates, thus my intent to run quick, exciting, and decisive games.

They are unit markers we created, each lists the Unit Name, Morale Grade, for foot Rank or Platoon and for horse Bullet or Blade. If these terms are unfamiliar you will find explanation in the rules.
Did you create brigade rosters for each player?
We had a list of forces for each side with the unit flag to help identify the unit on the table. The casualty sheets also had the unit flag to help identify each on the table. This combined with the unit markers the players still had issue finding units on the table. We let the overall commander for each side divide the brigades between his players.
Does BLB2 play as fast as BLB1?

Comparable, however there is more detail in BLB2. It's really a matter of how many units and rules familiarity. Others may say different. I personally say BLB2 is BLB1 finished. No offense to Barry. :)

Send me your email and I'll send you what I have on the scenario we ran.

None taken Joe :D

The comment is valid.

Justin, BLB2 should not take longer. Fundamentally the game is the same but some mechanical components are managed differently. Chiefly combats and morale. The time spent on the roundabouts will be made up on the swings! The game time should not vary too much whether you ran 1 Ed or 2 Ed but the outcomes under certain conditions could be quite different... Will look forward to seeing what you decide.

Joe,
Interested in your Brigade sheets you made. I too use something similar for each brigade CC. Lists their assigned units with spaces to marks hits, first fire, unit I.D. and a pic of the unit flag.
Would like to compare notes.

May I recommend Walcourt

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Walcourt

Part of the action may be a good example of 'fighting in built up areas', features lots of guard type units, a cavalry charge by Marlborough and a rear guard action by Villars.

Or

Leuze

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Leuze

A cavalry action that could of developed into a large battle.

I ran the demo game for my club this past Saturday. It was well received and several people liked it enough to begin collecting new armies for the period.

I have posted a short battle report here: http://royalistroundhead.blogspot.com/ and I invite you to peruse it.

I ended up creating my own scenario, based on what figures I was able to borrow, and the table that was made available to me...I had to borrow terrain, figures, and even dice, so I worked with what was offered.

Many thanks to Barry and Clarence for yeoman work on their part getting stuff to me that I needed...and at the last minute!
