Basing infantry 2 x 2

Post by janbruinen » Sun Jul 24, 2011 7:03 pm

Dus anyone using a different basing than the 3x2 (infantry) or 3x1 (cavalry), eg 2x2 infantry with a 4*4cm base and 2x1 cavalry with a 4*5 base?

I have based my figs on 40x40mm with 4 figures per base for foot and 2 figures per base for horse on 50x40mm. The pics of my games in the BLB board show this basing.

I have been thinking about to put my infantry in 5 x 4 cm bases for 5 figures. It is a very good shape for figures like those from Copplestone and Perry (and Warfare, I supose) but not from Front Rank.

I am basing mine at 4 figures in two ranks on a 2" square base. At three bases to the battalion, it takes up less table space and saves me money on figures (a necessity!).

My cavalry will also be based on the same sized base.

Thanks for the answers.
Some extra info: we are not thinking about smaller units (yet  ) but 5bases of 4 or 3 figures for infantry (2 bases of 3 with officers and flags and 3 bases of 4) plus 2 bases of each 2pikes.

I base my infantry on 45mm square bases
4 to a base. 12 figures to a unit. Originally we used a different set of rules . Also 12 figure units are half of a front rank battalion pack.
Cavalry 2 to a base usually 50 x 50 but sometimes deeper to protect charging horses tails!

Guys,

as most of you know, basing is not an issue with the rules. I began 21 years ago with the 40 x 40 mm 4 models per base but rebased a bout 15 years ago as I prefer a closer look between the models. Whatever you do will look good and won;t affect the rule system..

We've been using the alternate method that Barry mentioned in the BLB v2, 2x3 - 2 figures across by 3 figures deep with 24 per unit for those units of the 'rank/volley fire' persuasion. The platoon units are done in the 'regular' 3 across by 2 deep configuration. But as Barry has stated, it doesn't really matter much. We just like the difference in look.

I have based my Front Rank models in 60 x 60 mm, six models per stand. In this way, they are not touching nor "risking" bayonets, swords, etc. outside the base and I have enough space to put dead models, discarded weapons, etc. It results in a big unit, particularly with the pikes stand, but the look is great. I have been thinking about to put my cavalry (from Front Rank at the moment) in this same base, with three models.

As all of you have said, it is only a question of personal taste.

I hope I don't taste like chicken!

I have to correct my last post as I made it while in the throws of a migraine, but my infantry bases are 1.5" x 1" with 4 figures and I am going to base my pike stands at 2 figures per a base sized 1.5" x .5".

Money is a huge issue with me, else I'd be going FR on everything instead of predominantly plastic, but I ALSO like to field lots of units and with the smaller frontage and less depth for pikes, I can get more on the table.

My plastic cavalry figures will be releasing in a month and those will indeed be based as I mentioned previously.

Our group here in Tucson use the 2 X 2 method.

Ray, what is the designation for the WSS British unit? I like the cool looking flag. I saw it in the BLB2 booklet, but there wasn't an identification number/name with it.

Thank you...great looking units too!!!

Looks like the 3rd Foot but sure Ray will confirm.

Yes, after a quick search in my dictionary, I know that "taste" is not the better word I could have used  (afortunadamente, en castellano me defiendo un poco mejor).

Ray, your British/English unit is very fine. I was not sure about that size of bases (50 x 50 mm) with the Front Rank models, but the unit looks great. I have been following your project since the first Cavalry models and I would like to see more of it. For that conflict (WSS) I am thinking to put the Infantry in "your" bases and the Cavalry in 50 x 60mm for two models (I would like to make something similar to your project for the Almansa battle but...).

Cheers,

Juan

In my Osprey book, "Marlboroughs Army", the 3rd appears to be the "Buff's"...is that correct?

Thank you.
