dismounted dragoons

I know the rules say 5-6 figures per base for infantry and dismounted dragoons, but could I check this? If the dragoons are organised 3 per base as the other horse when mounted, and some will be horse-holders, then how does that work? Do you just have 1 base per squadron, perhaps?

YUP, 1 BASE PER SQUADRON... Counting them as 5 rather than 6 models makes them more brittle and represents the horseholders dropping out of the firing line

Barry,
Could I check that the unit of 5 counts as 5 for noting casualties but still counts as a 6 man unit for purposes of firing?
Also, regarding your idea elsewhere of horse holder units, would they be on foot or horse sized bases? Do we need 1 for each pair of 3 man stands (or 2 if we are using the smaller horse stands?)

I just use one stand to represent where the horses are being held, I don't see that you need one for each stand of dismounted dragoons.

I see you went with a more skirmishing formation, where as I'm going with a more formal formation similar to my infantry, 50mm x 50mm bases and three figures in the front rank and two in the rear rank.
I think for the 1690 period and Ireland your right to use them as skirmishers, where as during the WSS period they would have been in a dismounted infantry role. Ray.
Thanks Ray, I don't really see them as being in a skirmish roll but as they were often used to take and hold fixed positions such as villages etc then no unit could remain perfectly formed which is the effect I was going for.
Cheers
Dave

I'm actually going to base my dismounted dragoons as individual models and use the rules developed for small units. I will deploy them in close order for most instances with the bases touching, but I will have the flexibility to deploy them in a looser formation in villages. As a bonus I can use them for Donnybrook!

I used the same method with my converged grenadiers...

Mark, remember foot don't fire by individual model but by STAND. This means a full stand of dragoons fires like a full stand of Foot BUT with only 5 models represented it will receive the minus for a depleted stand quicker than 6 Foot.

Also, I will(when I get round to it) have one stand of horse holders per foot stand.

I had a query over whether 2 stands of 5 counted as 2 firing stands or not, so that's now clear.

I think I'll just go for 1 dismounted horse holder with a nominal 2 or 3 horses per (horse sized) stand as a marker. That'll save a fair bit of money compared to say 6 stands and 3 horseholders and 20 or sp horses to represent William's larger dragoons regiment.
