Myself and Richard, played test game No3 of the rules last week. We came up with 2 questions, both have pictures, it might make it easier to answer.

Question 1 - Artillery targeting - The artillery on the hill has been firing at unit A, who is firing at the unit in the the built up area. Unit B moves past unit A, therefore closer to the artillery piece. So which unit should be a priority for the gun? A- because the order for the game was to hold the built up area or B because it is now the closest target and heading in the general direction of the gun?

Question 2 - Unit A has passed its morale to charge Unit C, in the built up area. Unit C, then threw a 6 to fire a devastating volley at unit A, in step 10 of the play sequence Musketry fire. Can unit B fire at Unit C in the built up area as Unit A and C are not yet in melee?

My answer would be as in Target Priority 4 on page 33 Nearest enemy unit. (Sorry, but we want to save our own arses.)
This leads to a question of my own - If artillery have bombard orders from the start of the game i.e. when firing at a BUA, does it have to follow Target Priorities.
The rules state that only if a commander joins the guns can the target be changed.

My answer would be No, Play Sequence on page 15.
Step 5 Charge declarations (Test Morale)
Step 6 Charge target (Test Morale) If they pass may Stand and Fire.
Step 7 Charge moves and target units if Retreating, Routing or Evading.
Step 8 All other movement.
Step 9 Artillery Fire.
Step 10 Musket Fire (Charging targets test morale to charge home "if hit")
Because the charge has already started and committed to close with the enemy, it only stops short to allow the defenders to fire and the attackers test to charge home "if hit" if they are not hit then there is no reason to test and they plough into the defenders and a melee is fought.
If the defenders fire a point blank volley I don't rate your chances on charging home

Cheers,

Ray.
