2 scenarios appearing soon

Post by barr7430 » Sat Jan 16, 2010 11:01 pm

I have recently completed to scenarios for publication in the trade press over the next couple of months. Both are aimed at 'starter battles' in the 100 Days Campaign.

The first is the British cavalry rearguard action after Quatre Bras on 17th June
The second is the first contact after the French crossed the Sambre near Charleroi on the 15th. This involves the Prussians.

Both are 10 move objective based games and do not require a huge number of troops per side.

In the second article I have included some great ideas from Clarence about small modifications to the MP mechanisms for smaller actions.

Any hints as to which particular elements of the 'trade press'? Some of us are a little divorced from the wargaming mainstream, eg. New Zealand.

Well,

a reasonably well known NZ owned mag might be a good first stop

And then of course there is a colourful dual language mag which may be more easily accessible on 'Las Ramblas' than in Otago!

Sounds good Barry, I look forward to seeing it. We don't really get previews in the NZ office.

The Genappe article is out is WI. Thank you to those who have written to me to say they enjoyed it.. alas, I haven't even seen it in print as my copy didn't arrive

The Sambre article is I hope en route to print in WSS. If it doesn't appear there I will offer it out.

Two more in the pipe... an 1806 scenario for street fighting between the Prussians and the French in north Germany and a further
1815 scenario.. inspiration courtesy of Mr O'Brien.. thanks Dave! 8)

Both should appear sometime this year..

Barry, do you anticipate making the above described scenarios available via other means--e.g., as a download of a file stored here at the LOA site--or did you sign 'exclusive' contracts with both WI & WSS that would prevent alternate distribution? (Both are magazines to which I have long since ended subscriptions.) Just curious.

No Bryce I have not signed exclusives. It is my intention to upload some of the scenarios here after an appropriate time. I want the site to focus more on supporting the Wordtwister Brand by providing scenarios, tools, tips and general value-add to users of the rule sets.

It is a competitive market out there and although I have not Dr Evil type plans for global dominance and destruction  in the wargames world I do draw a lot of satisfaction from people using and enjoying our rules.

I think the R2E wagon is beginning to roll a bit faster now that a few people have gotten beyond the pics and have put the toys on the table.
The inane dribblings on TMP have morphed into more informed comment, questions and critique.. at last.

Of course you would expect an author to be an advocate of his scribblings but the game flow of R2E belies the alleged complexity of the rules and text.

Strip it out and look at the nuts and bolts and what you get is a very fast moving, decisive result based grand tactical wargame which provokes lots of combat and action.
Maybe I should have wirtten that on the back cover!

I await yet another TMP backlash whilst quivering in my slippers

Hence my new profile picture  .

I have more sets of Napoleonic rules than I like to admit. The actual rules are quite simple in this one. When I study a set, I first take a regiment of British in line and advance a regiment of French in column against them.

It doesn't matter who wins but, if the action flows then it passes the chicken test* and this set did in flying colours. I then try a brigade against a brigade and slowly add in cavalry and artillery and that way I don't sprain my old brain.

I do this with every set of rules and not just RtE.

If I were asked to name the one thing that sold me on this set it would have to be the correct formation used for a French attack column. I had been surreptitiously using this for years when playing solo and it was good to see that I was not alone. The column of companies also imparts a realism in set up.

Jim

*When a jet aricraft engine is tested on the ground, they fire a cannon full of dead chickens into the engine to see if will survive a bird strike. If it fails the chicken test then it's pointless going any further.

I have to agree reading the rules they do seem a little complex but once you get models down on the table the game flows really well and the rules fall into place and you can understand the reasoning behind them.
