Playing in 15/18mm

Post by Captain Chook » Tue May 04, 2010 12:58 am

A quick break during lunch. I have no time for a further post on my recent game, but had worked on this yesterday.

The real problem with going to 15mm is getting move distances right. For our game we simply changed from inches to cm, but this caused problems as the bases for 15/18mm figures are approximately 50-60% that of 28mm, no 40%.
This problem caused difficulties in keeping brigades within the commanders command radius. It also made movement quite slow.

I have calculated the movements and ranges for a variety of situations. I have had to do this from memory as I don't/didn't have the rules with me at the time. I have calculated at both 0.5 and 0.6 standard measures.
The only place where I have made a major departure in the "compromise" section is with command radius, which at this scale is perhaps better to err on the the generous side.

I hope this is useful and perhaps sparks some discussion.

Movement/Range RtE (inches) At 0.6 (cm) At 0.5 (cm)
Infantry Line 8 12 10
Cavalry Line 10 15 13
Infantry Column 12 18 15
Cavalry Column 14 21 18
Commander 24 37 30
Brigade Radius 9 14 11
Cavalry Charge Range 42 64 53
Point Blank Musketry <3 <5 <4
Effective Range Musket 3 to 9 5 to 14 4 to 11
Artillery Effective Range 9 to 36 14 to 55 11 to 46

Artillery Park Depth 20cm 12cm 10cm

Movement/Range Compromise (cm)
Infantry Line 10
Cavalry Line 14
Infantry Column 15
Cavalry Column 18
Commander 30
Brigade Radius 15
Cavalry Charge Range 55
Point Blank Musketry <4
Effective Range Musket 4 to 12
Artillery Effective Range 12 to 46

Artillery Park Depth 10cm

Damn, that didn't come out well. Looks like I can't post an Excell spreadsheet.
I hope this makes some sense.

This works a little better.
Some distances have not strictly followed mathematical formula to maintain reasonable "granularity" of movement.
