Not really a case of schadenfreude but it is interesting to see a one man assault against BP taking place on a Republic to Empire thread on TMP  .. so it's not just R2E getting pelters from the punters!

Life is full of curious little events.

Whilst chatting to Alan and Michael Perry in the reception of Scanticon I was introduced to the editor of MW!.... It is not Brucie baby but some English chap called Matt or similar.

I asked about the article and a right of reply... he was cagey but relatively OK about that.
He put his disclaimer in pretty quick by saying he didn;t write it but two blokes in Canada did. I have also heard that one of them is a DBA player or something... hmm the pieces begin to fit together..

DBA..
4 X 4 table
Now, when did I see the name Brice Macfarlane before.. I think he wrote a rule set long ago and I think I have it somewhere..

back to the research!

yup... googled him. Canadian Wargames Group... HOTT and DBA'er...

it's all OK, I feel much better about that review now.. he'd probably get agrophobia on a table larger than 4 x 4 (inches)

That's probably why they rated Lasalle above all the rest, when I saw some of the pre-publication details of Lasalle it struck me as very much a DBX version of Naps which was very surprising considering what he had previously produced as Grande Armee.

I seem to remember his better half muttering something about four inches too.

Oh well, at least we know there are two Canadians keen on R2E, myself and that nice fellow from Toronto who's planning on showing it to his club.

I have to agree with Dave, when I started to read Lasalle the first thing I thought of was DBA and that finished it for me. I have a copy of Black Powder, but that will be used primarly for my colonial projects. But don't worry I'm currently trying to convert the heathen's in my area to RtE. And I think it's working! Joe, I don't know if you have read any of my comments on TMP regarding BP, I have tried them for a number of games and many periods and the only periods I found the rules worked best for to give a proper flavour of the period were the Colonial and AWI. I tried them for Marlburian, watched at least five SYW games and a few Napoleonic games and I felt they didn't reflect those periods at all which I think is the problem trying to write a set of rules that covers such a wide period and with such massive changes in weapons and tactics.

Barry, did the jokers from MW ever get in touch about a response article?

The review is rearing it's head again...

To be fair, the TMP editor is asking for readers to rate the rules, but the thread starts with a quote from the article.

No, I wrote the letter but never sent it. Now I will.

Don't know what the 'Editor' is playing at.. is that Armintrout? What is the point of this kind of provocative post?

Its to get the hit rate up and create a stir ,he's doing it with blackpowder as well. These sort of polls are apt to get some of the tmprs hot under the collar and create the type of arguements we all like to tune into watch.
