Hi Andrew,

This is what my painter uses for my WSS figures when painting the Scarlet Red Coat for the British.

The scarlet red recipe, consists of a base of Vallejo burnt cadmium red 814, followed by red 926, carmine red 908, red 947, vermillion 909 and finally scarlett 817. All of these reds are from the vallejo model color range. The base coat is just thinned with water and surfactant, just enough to make it workable. The subsequent layers are all thinned in increased degrees with liquetex slo-dri blending medium. The final layers are more like glazes and there is some - blending. The medium contains acrylic polymer emulsion which makes it more adherent and robust than when just thinned with water.

As you can see he uses many different colours combined in layers and highlights before getting to the end result.

Hope this helps,

Ray.

I use the foundry British Redcoat triad. Works for my ham fisted attempts.

I've been using Vallejo as of late but I'd like to try the Andrea reds to see how they work.

The P3 reds are superb as are Vallejo.

It's just a matter of trial and error in mixing to get the 'redcoat' red to your satisfaction. Should come to you quite quickly though.

Hi Andrew,

I followed your Blog on Marlborough's redcoats and I must thank you for adding my "Blenheim OOB" thread.
You've missed out the artillery though commanded by Colonel Holcroft Blood which I think you'll agree is a great name and no doubt did spill alot of blood on the battlefield.Did you also know that his father is the only person who has succeeded in stealing the crown jewels.
On the left wing supporting Lord Cutts assaulting the village of blenheim 10 sakers (5pdrs) & 4 howitzers (5.5").
In the centre supporting the assault on the village of oberglauheim 6 culverins (9 pdrs) also spread between the left wing and centre were 24 (3pdrs) light manoverable guns but not battalion guns as such at this time.
On the right wing 16 (3pdrs), but these were not from the british train of artillery.

Ray.

Blood has a local connection, he married in Culcheth church and had the wedding party at The Raven just down the road! The pub is still up and running and so is the church. I dont know if it was a keen sense of humour that made him choose the Raven after he's attempt on the crown jewels.

The ultimate red is from Plaka/Pelican paints called Signal Red.
