Painting Warfare Figures

My first two packs came in the mail two days ago
- command and grenadiers.
Ref their swords, should I attach them first to the figure and then paint or paint the figure and then attach the swords.
Thanks, Ed the novice painter.
cheers
Edward

Assemble first then when any glue has gone off thoroughly over night prime & then paint. Very few glues work well on painted surfaces & this should be avoided where possible. You can use super glue but it is better if you also use a little modelling putty or two part epoxy on heavy parts.
I am a little confused, I have both the infantry command packs & thought they had pole arms of one sort or another as the only separate bits.

Thanks for the tips
I have the stationary command pack, comes with 1 x detached half-pike and 1 x detached half-pike w axe/halbert.
The grenadiers firing in cloth hat come with detached swords.
