What exactly were the galloper guns used for? I thought horse artillery hadn't been invented yet . . .

Rob,
It was'nt intended as horse artillery in the way we know the term.
The thought was to have a light artillery piece that could easely follow the foot regiments. The caliber goes from 1/2, 1, 2, 3 to 4 pounders. You can say, more or less, it was an englisch answer to the Regimental guns of the other European States.

Yup,
wouldn't get too hung up on the term 'galloper gun', I saw it more as an alternative shaped 'light gun' and could be usedin substitution for...
just more variety
