Swedish Cavalry Tactics at Lund 1676

The following is a description of the prepartion for the right wing Swedish cavalry's attack against the Danish cavalry early in the battle. It is found in Gustaf Bjorlin's "Kriget mot Danmark 1675-1679." It was translated with the help of Google and a Swedish-English dictionary, so it may not be translated correctly in every detail. The source used by Bjorlin is Lt. Gen. Ferson's "Relation."

"Then a message came from the Lifregemente, asking how they should "strike"[the Danes]. Fersen gave this some thought and he rode to the squadrons and shouted: "What think ye, brethren? In what way will you meet [strike] them?" The squadrons responded with one loud voice that they wished to do as he commanded them. Then he continued, "I think it best to go in with pistols, because then we can get at them closer and see the whites of their eyes;” upon which all replied briskly: "That is true [That’s right]," and let their carbines drop against their thighs and seized their pistols."

The "whites of their eyes" was used in written instructions on how to conduct an attack issued a couple of weeks before. As I understand them, the cavalry were to ride in among the enemy, fire one pistol and draw their swords. The second pistol was not to be fired, rather it was to be saved for use against the enemy second line.
