Question (for Gunter?) on Saxon cuirassiers

Hi,

Recalling Dan Schorr's website, from a few years back, he suggested that Saxon cuirassier other ranks during the first decade of the 18th Century, wore a sleeved buff coat, with the cuirass worn over it, rather than the red coat, with the cuirass worn under that. Officers appear to have worn the red coat (with facings) and the cuirass underneath the coat.

Can anyone tell me when this practice started/finished? I seem to recall him saying they were probably dressed this way at Fraustadt, but what about the 1680s and 1690s?

Also, is there any clear indication when all Saxon troops started wearing the formal tricorne?

Many thanks,
RtL

Other heads I ma sure will have firmer information but mu understanding was that Saxons wore the buff coat under their breast plate an then the coat, what you are seeing as a buff coat in the later period is perhaps just the outer coat left off in hot weather?

Hi Ronan,
I am sure Dan will chime in as soon as he notice your question.
The Saxons wore a "Collar" made of yellow (Elk?)-Leather starting, I believe, with the date of the standing Army 1680 until the Napoleonic Wars (1806-09) when they are replaced in 1810 by actual cloth uniforms.
By Order of the Elector in 1695 all Infantry should get the Red Coat like the Leib Regiment instead of the previously used grey white coat. I could not find any reference when the Horse Regiments got their Red coats.
But very often the Collar was worn without the red coats.

The Tricorne "arrived" in the Saxon ranks arround 1706 to 1708 after the departure of the Swedes from Saxony.

Hope that helps,
Günter

Roger and Gunter,

Thank you very much, that was exactly the information I was looking for. (Just to be clear, the "Collar" is the name of the entire garment, not just the bit that goes around the neck, often referred to as a "cape" in the 18th Century - yes?)

Thank you - the first image is pretty much how I had pictured them during the pre-WSS period.

Was the helmet used until the introduction of the tricorne c. 1706-1708? Or was the broadbrim hat used at some point? TIA

All the contemporary paintings that I have seen show the Saxon cavalry in hats.
