One Battle to rule them all - Napoleonic

Post by Captain of Dragoons » Fri Oct 07, 2011 9:27 pm

Here is a fun question.

If you could only set up the table and miniatures one more time and you were stuck with playing that one Napoleonic battle over and over again which one would you pick and what would be your reasoning for picking that battle?

I might go with Wagram.

A closer contest than the Napoleon propaganda machine would have you believe! Lots of sub-texts and battles within battles to generate all sorts of scenario possibilities and what ifs to keep you entertained for a fair while.

Plus - you get two battles for the price of one as you'll have the table and the troops to do Aspern-Essling as well 8)

A veritable mini-campaign I tell you!

Leipzig. Many Battles in one. Lots of different armies.

I would probably agree with Leipzig for all the reasons you mentioned plus there are masses of 'what if' situations.

Jupp lepzig, lets you paint up 10 000 russians at 1:20, 9500 French and allies, 7000 Prussian and 7000 Austrian, Some 1000 Sweeds.

That should give you enough figures to paint for the rest of your life, while doing diffrent parts of the battle.

I was also thinking along the lines of Leipzig or something 1813.

@Duke of Plaza-Toro - that's a great idea about Aspern-Essling /Wagram.

I suppose i might not be the only one to think Waterloo, but i think i might pick this battle,if only because its a famous "last roll of the napoleonic dice" sort of game :D

Yeah Waterloo is up there, You get to do British in a propper Napoleonic battle with artillery and massed heavy cav.
You get KGL, Hanoverian, Dutch-Belgians. I really would have wished for the French to have had some Polish infantry, just to do some French allies.

Interesting talking about Waterloo vrs a earlier battle between Napoleon and a Russian/Prussian/Austrian foe.

In terms of game mechancis would it be easier to do a 1812/1813/1814 game where as the French and Allies fought the same way - I know this may look over simple - columns with supporting light troops and artillery. As compare to Waterloo, Anglo-Dutch using a line system against the French using a column system.

Interested in everybodies thoughts.

Jena & Auerstadt. The possibilities are endless for the French losing big time.

I don't think so. The prussians were using an outdated system of both organization and tactics (linear warfare) whereas the French under napoleon had around a century of musings and refinement to the french strategies (something with the word Aout at the end. Not too up on my French) and the newly developed corps organization.

Secondly, the Grand Armee Had over 2 (?) years of drill and discipline instilled within them from the camps along the atlantic.

In addition, leading up to the battles Napoleon had the Grand armee arrayed in the corps square, which gave him a supreme advantage in tactical maneuver. The fact that he fell for what could be classified as a feint at Jena could have spelt disaster if Davout had not used his corps effeciently, if costly, during Auerstadt
