Help with WSS Brit Dragoon - Lloyd

Post by 18th Century Guy » Sat Sep 22, 2012 2:38 pm

I'm trying to find out information regarding the standards/flags for a British Dragoon regiment named 'Lloyd'. I've searched through what I have and I can't find a reference to Lloyd Dragoon's anywhere. Anyone?

This unit went on the Spanish expedition in 1702 but then returned home. It went back to Spain in late 1706 after an expedition to France was cancelled and diverted to Spain. It was called Carpenter's or Queen Anne's Dragoons by this time.

It fought at Almanza in 1707, Almenar, Saragossa and possibly Penalva in 1710 before being destroyed/captured at Brihuega again in 1710.

Actually the regiment, together with another of dragoons, remained in England for the duration of the war. Detachments of both regiments served on various expeditions during the was.

The 1702 expedition to Cadiz and Vigo has been mentioned. Lord Rivers' intended expedition to France is another. This expedition was launched to help the Camisards in the Cevennes who had risen against Louis XIV. However, the whole operation was cancelled and the troops were sent to Portugal, and later Spain, instead. Many of the regiments were decimated at the battle of Almanza in April 1707.

The detachments from the two regiments of dragoons, or what was left of it, were absorbed into various of the other regiments of dragoons after the battle.

Whoops yes you are right Wienand - I got my units mixed.

It looks like Essex's was reduced into Carpenter's, probably in Jan/Feb 1708. Then Carpenter's was in turn reduced in April 1708 and the remainder sent home then.
