I need to start William's cavalry off.

From Sapherson and Grant I've worked out the regts, uniforms, no of men and then translated that into BLB terms of how many squadrons/ half squadrons each.

It seems clear that a number of regiments- usually 3-4- need merged together to make squadrons.

I have 2 Qs to my esteemed colleagues out there.
1. Aesthetically, should I aim to put like colour of uniforms together or should I aim for a bit of variety?

2. Also, would I be better keeping the Garde de Corps separate as a troop or squadron- would their morale or training be higher than the other regts?

Many thanks,
Mark

Before painting any Dutch figures I think you should take a look at the new CD on the Dutch Army by Robert Hall et al. The info there is much more up to date than either Sapherson or Grant. I am having to repaint to some extent almost all of my Dutch cavalry and infantry.

Hi Mark,

What I did was use a actual orbat for Blenheim which told me how many squadrons were in each regiment of Horse or Dragoons and times this by six figures i.e. Cadogan's Horse are just a single squadron therefore six figures where as Lumley's Horse had three squadrons therefore eighteen figures.
This is how I read Mike McNally's orbat in his Osprey Campaign on the Boyne.
Regiments of Horse.
Gardes te Paard - 145 = 1 Squadron.
Lord Portland's - 357 = 3 Squadrons.
Monopvilan's - 171 = 1 Squadron.
Ginkel's - 152 = 1 Squadron.
Scholk's - 167 = 1 Squadron.
Van Oyen's - 164 = 1 Squadron.
Reideffel's - 174 = 1 Squadron.
Rancour's - 178 = 1 Squadron.
Nyenburg's - 175 = 1 Squadron.

Regiment of Dragoon.
Eppinger's - 621 = 6 Squadrons.

Hope that is of some help,

Ray.

Factually perhaps, but we are not talking about actual squadrons more of how to model them under BLB2 & given that squadrons varied quite a bit in size in actuality its not as easy as it might be to convert squadrons on a one for one basis.

A very similar issue came up on the recent Masion du Roi thread.

Hi Simon & Ginger,

I'm sure I read somewhere that it was six squadrons for Eppingers Dragoon's, but I could be wrong...it wouldn't be the first time.

Ginger, I'm not sure what your trying to get at?
Under the BLB2 rules, page 5 it states that it's six figures per squadron, but it also states that the figure to man ratio is 1:40 and therefore a squadron equates to 240 real men.
Barry has mentioned in the past that this is actually a double squadron, but I personally perfer the ratio 1:20 and 120 men to a squadron.
Anyway it makes no differance as it's the number of bases and on page 12, it tells you to base your figures 2 or 3 to a base, therefore a squadron equals 4 to 6 figures.
If you wanted to you could use actual battle or campaign strengths and divide them by either ratio to find the figure strength and have what I would call spares.
Therefore you would have your squadron of two bases, but also one or two figures based as spares to take off as casualties before having to take a base off.

Just a idea :!:

Ray.

Thanks for the advice so far. I'm happy with the OB and the number of figures/bases required it's really the uniform colours concerns me and whether there were established brigades I should be adhering to.
Is there somewhere in the UK sells this Robert Hall book so I can avoid paying in dollars?

Ah! Yes!
I can solve my problem by having 2 figures to a troop for smaller rgts.

Thanks all!
