Pet animals in NYW/WSS/GNW.

Post by maciek » Thu Oct 13, 2011 4:51 pm

Do you have any information about pet animals, kept by officers or soldiers, and accompanying them on the battlefield ?
I think, that Cadogan had a dog, but I cant remeber it's breed.
It would be great to add such an animal to the stand of soldiers.

I do believe certain Scottish regiments kept a few sheep...

Both guilty but the Welsh were amateurs.

Both guilty but the Welsh were amateurs and ended up with the ugly ewes.

IIRC Front Rank's Cadogan figure has a dog with it. Whether it's the right breed, dunno.

Tallard had a tortoise. He was one of the first people in Europe to get one!

Yes, trust the Scots to prefer the rams to the ewes!

Sheep are not the only attractive animals!

Anyway,I read a book a long time ago about Malboroughs march down to Blenhiem that mentioned a Bavarian Officer who owned a Dancing Bear.
That was the only reference,so no mention if it went on campaign with him or offered sound tatical advice. But thought it might make a fantastic command base. I've never got round to finding suitable models though. But hey, a bear, better than a dumb sheep. And a dancing bear in a nice frock might add colour :D
(The historical evidence that God comes from Lancashire is slim, however he's definitely not from Yorkshire)

Angus has a nice little dancing bear vignette for his SYW Russian army, you can find a pic on his site. I think the bear is part of Foundry's SYW range?
