I am about to start painting up the prince as one of my brigade commanders and then it struck me, what would he be wearing uniform wise?
I really have no idea as to what colours to use. Although he was serving in dutch pay, he was a prussian so would he be in a prussian uniform ? Maybe dark green with red cuffs ?

Can anyone help ?

You probably can't go wrong painting him in the colors of a regiment he was Inhaber of. Or, frankly, anything else you want. Officer's uniforms were rather fluid during this period, and generals even more so.

Otherwise, see if there is a portrait available of him in uniform?

Hi Jez,

Prussian officers during the WSS in Dutch service.

With regard to uniform, officers were not especially regulated in this period, but they had in common the sign of their rank, the gorget (cuirass), in silver or gold, the remaining item of the knightly armour.
It was decorated with the red or black eagle on a white or light blue enamel shield.Beside this was the black/silver or black/white waist sash this being the mark of a Prussian officer, those being in Dutch service would have worn a second sash of orange over the shoulder, although not all did so.
Red officers canes were sometimes carried and large wig's were worn, lace cravats, hat plumage completed the noble appearance of these gentlemen.
However there is mention of less elegantly dressed captains and lieutenants who appeared in the same uniform colours as the men and only identifiable by the sash, gorget, wig and simple lace as being of rank.

Hope this helps,

Ray.

Wikipedia article, linked by Seine Majestat FAI  revelaed, that general Holstein Beck was the knight of the order of Black Eagle. What is very probable, he could wear the sash of the order. According to Wikipedia http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwarzer_Adlerorden the sash was orange.

BTW. According to Hall's book, red coats were very common among Prussian high staff. I would paint the general (and one day I will) in red coat, heavily laced with gold, and with orange sash of Black Eagle order.

Analysis of Blenheim tapestries, here: http://www.historyextra.com/tapestry , gives good insight how general officers looked like.
