Thunder on the Danube - 1704

I am going to start a thread and just keep adding to it that charts the progress of my Grand Alliance army as it builds over the months. I started painting this back in Jun 2011 with a couple of sample peices as I was - up with other projects and only really got going in December 2011.

It will be loosely based on the OOB at Blenheim and will be a mixture of all nationalities and types. Basically, anything that catches my eye ! So, Grand Alliance armies need grand plans and I have worked out a force that will be 13 infantry battalions and 22 cavalry squadrons with a few guns of varying size for good measure for starters. I'm thinking that this should keep me going for a couple of years.

Anyway, look out for the updates......

So this is what I have started with. A few bits to test colours and styles to see what works.

This is the first of my brigade command stands:

Was happy with how the command stand turned out so started doing a few more bits. Guns in the rules are in three categories; light, field and gun of position.

Here we have a field gun and a gun of position. These allowed me to try out some different colours and styles for the different clothes.

Within the rules, you have to give orders to your troops. These can be changed by sending a courier

Dec 2011

Moving on, I then started on the first regiment. I wanted to base my force around the battle of blenhiem in 1704 so worked with the order of battle from the book "Marlborough goes to war" by Iain Stanford. For my Dutch brigade I will be doing that of the Prinz of Holstein-Beck which contained

Goor IR (Dutch)
Rechteren IR (Dutch)
Sturler (Swiss in Dutch service)
Hirzel (Swiss in Dutch service)
Heidebrecht (Ansbach)

So I couldnt find any information for the flag of Goor so have replaced them with another Dutch regiment, Waes. They are very similar in uniforms. The flag is from Maverick Models on material but I have also done further work on it. Figures are from Front Rank. More pics of these in the gallery.

This is Webb's 8th Regiment of Foot, depicted at the battle of Blenheim in 1704 and will form the first of my english brigades along with two other regiments (Churchill's 3rd Foot and the 1st Royal Scots). Is my Task 2 for the build.

Figures are from the excellent Front Rank range, flag is from Maverick Models but has been heavily worked on.

Churchill wrote:...there is no mention of the Dutch Schlangenberg regiment in the Blenheim OOB.
OOB is LOOSELY based on Blenhiem Ray, Schlangenburg will replace Rechteren in that Brigade. :D
Churchill wrote:The other thing is Artillery crews in BLB2, field guns now have 4 crew and positional guns have 6 crew.
Aim to solve this by adding the figures to the artillary space marker that should be 50-100% of the gun base. So for a field gun it will have one other crew figure and the positional gun will have two. 8)

Impressive painting!

On a side note, for some reason the germanised version of the name Slangenburg seems to popping up all the time, the regiment was named after Johan Baer van Slangenburg(h).

More on him here:

Well a few of you might remember me starting a WSS project at the start of the year. It was meant to be my group build but unfortunately due to work commitments I missed a deadline back in April so continued to plug away here and there. This is where I have got to now so thought id share a few pics. Its also been a while since i posted.

The army to date: 6 Infantry battalions in two brigades. One is English, the other Dutch. One cavalry squadron. Field gun and gun of position.

The English Brigade

The dutch brigade

Image

The Artillary and train. The rules call for an area that is impassable behind the gun depending on its size so these will be marked with the train.

The general

The markers: L > R: Shaken, Disordered, rout, courier

English 3rd Regt of Foot: Churchill's Buffs

English 18th Regt of Foot: Hamilton's Royal Irish

My first horse regiment; Cadogans Horse. Lots of debate rages on the facing colour for these in 1704 but I went for white as I will have another green faced unit.

I have another 12 horse on the work bench currently but will finish those and take a break to paint some ACW. Will return to this project next year to add a further 7 infantry regiments and 14 horse squadrons. Hope you like em. For pics of the other regiments not shown in detail, have a look in the group build section.
