OOB Neerwinden 1693

Post by PaulMc » Thu May 10, 2012 10:17 pm

Hi folks,

Can anyone furnish me with orbats for Neerwinden? The Allied army would be particularly useful. Some sites mention British troops involved but no mention of any other. Thanks for any help.

An OOB seems not to be available, or I hadn't found it so far
This map however may be of some use
http://www.digam.net/image.php?file=dok ... jpg&b=1200
As I dont know how far the OOB of Steenkerke may be different from that of "Landen"(Neerwinden)
http://digam.net/image.php?file=dokumen ... jpg&b=1200
I also dont know how far this imperial army ha something to do with it

EDIT:
Sorry just found out that all the above will be of no use

In case there's seemingly no Ordre de bataille available, I usually flick through the regimental histories (and the like), for instance:

http://www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/a ... hinfantry/

take all the ".htm" and read about the regiments, and you receive the facts

26th Regiment of Foot - defended Laer etc pp.

or German sources, like

http://www.preussenweb.de

at Neerwinden/Landen: IR8, 1 Batt of IR 11, 1st Batt of IR 15 (Garde), Kürassiere 1, 5, 6; Dragoner 1 (stationed am Winkelbach between Laer and Kleine Geete), Dragoner 2

tedious work, but you will find very interesting facts and stories

stay tuned

Thanks so much gentlemen, I really do appreciate this. :)

Hi Ray, I have seen that map before, but never at that size or resolution!
What I most want to find out is the other Allied troops at the battle. Thanks to El Cid I now know some Brandenburg/Prussian units. I know there were Hanoverians, but not which ones. I've found a site saying at least two battalions of Spanish troops:
http://www.histoireeurope.fr/RechercheL ... de+L%E9vis

Zuniga & Mancheno.

Still searching for more.

I have taken liberty to add a list of British regiments at Neerwinden to my blog. In this post I have commented on the aforementioned wiki. I have also used better understandable regimental names  .

Please see http://britisharmylineages.blogspot.com ... -1693.html for details. Any comments and additions are welcomed.

Wienand

The source is German, but very good:

Geschichte der königlich-hannoverschen Armee, Band 1
von L. von Sichart,Alexander Eberhard von Sichart,Robert Wilhelm Georg von Sichart

http://books.google.at/books?id=2go9AAA ... &q&f=false

§ 199 = Campaign of 1693 in the Netherlands, Hanoverian troops and others

§ 200 = Battle of Neerwinden

if you need some help (with the German language) please tell

Having visited the battlefield of Neerwinden and spent about two hours driving around it I would add the following details:

The map although accurate(perhaps) in terms of troop deployment is extremely deceptive as it suggests lots of slopes and high ground. They do not exist categorically. This is an extremely flat part of Belgium. There is a very low ridge towards the French positions but high ground behind the villages is non existent. This land is arable crop fields mostly corn and if their is any gradient it is so miniscule as to be unnoticeable. The battlefield is almost unchanged and so when standing behind the villages in the ground occupied by the Dutch (low country type buildings but now of modern construction) the French positions are invisible.

Secondly the Geete river is a stream approx 2 meters wide but in a very deep cut like a dyke. Its side are V shaped and steep and a man would have to scramble on hands and knees to get up/down. Impassable for guns and horses. A small but very difficult obstacle which would totally disrupt order for any troops.

Important to know I think.

An order of battle is published in "Histoire Militaire de Flandres", by Beaurain, 1776. Unfortunatly the google book has no plates, so a visit to the library is necessary.
