Jame II Irish Guards - One or Two Battalions

Post by Dfogleman2 » Mon Jul 23, 2012 3:11 pm

I always thought there were two battalions, but I think I read somewhere (maybe on British Army Lineages) that there actually was only one. I am sure someone here knows the answer! Which is it? I would hate to do two, only to find out I need only one.

Thanks,

Dannie

All sources I have seen say 2 Dannie. The number of companies is the give away... 23 I think.

Several Jacobite regiments had 2 battalions in Ireland...

The Guards
Boiselleau's

I think maybe the Grand Prior's and possibly a couple of others.

Hello Dannie,

As you could read on my blog, the pre-Revolution Irish Guards contained just 13 companies. As it were large companies, it could count for two battalions (when the Irish Guards were raised in 1662 it was about 1200 men). With the companies, as a battalion, going to England in October 1688 there would not be much left.

However, one should not forget that the spring of 1689 saw a huge expansion of the Irish Jacobite army. Eventually leading to the 20+ companies sizes Irish Guards.

cheers,
Wienand

Thanks. I really wanted to do two anyway. Now I can sleep at night.

dillions also had two battalion's according to steven's . - priors i think only had one but steven's who served in the lord - priors simply describes it as the lord grand priors regiment . spharson in william at war in ireland and scotland list's it as having two battalions' but i'm sure that he also list's james foot guards as having 3 battailon's but i'll have to check this when i get back from offshore.
