Did the Gardes the Paard return to the Low Countreis to fight at Steenkirk or Needwinden?

The war in Ireland was over by late 1692. Neerwinden was in 1693. I can't remember the GtP being in the Aughrim OOB but don't have reference books to hand.. someone will confirm this as they reach for their McNally! (maybe Mike himself!). I would then assume if this is correct that they may have returned to Flanders with William unless he kept them in England for some reason..

From an overview of the forces in 1693, the Garde te Paard was in England, and the Garde du Corps was in Flanders. Two battalions of Dutch Garde te Voet were also in Flanders, the third one was in England as well.
If I recall correctly, the Garde te Paard remained in England until 1699 (when it had to return to Holland).

Wienand

Guys,

Taking the thread full circle...

I've just read the Osprey Boyne Campaign book, its very good, one of the better ones and I saw that the Gardes te Paard and Portlands Horse are mentioned seperatley but they were the same unit. I wonder if the Gardes te Paard mentioned should actually be the Gardes du Corps, as these were a single squadron and that would mean that Portland's Horse would be a 2 squadron strong formation of Gardes te Paard?

Just a thought...

Mark

This comes from an article in Wargames illustrated, and should help, sorry i can't remember which issue
Regarding Portland's Horse, as far as I've read they are indeed the Gardes te Paard.

Thank you. Do you know if the Garde de Corp cavalryman wearing the cuirass is an officer?

Most certainly yes!
Officiers of "Heavy" or "Elite" Regiments wore most of the time a Cuirass.
It also shows their Rank.
