Army of the Grand Duchy of Wurttemberg 1680-1715???

Post by MePaintsGood2 » Tue Apr 22, 2014 8:30 pm

I am having a devil of a time finding any uniform info on these guys......Or any other info, other than they existed. Having recently found out that's where my ancestors hail from (I had always thought England, but they "Americanized" the spelling of our last name), I am beginning to delve into Wurttemberg armies on all fronts. I have the Napoleonic version in progress, the Seven Years war version on deck, and would really like to do a WSS or preferably a NYW version, but can't find anything.
Thanks!

I apologise that I cannot help on the WSS front, but wondered which firm you were using for your Napoleonic army - any photos yet?

Hello , I'm afraid I only have very limited information about a couple or more Wurttemberg cavalry regiments fighting along the Spaniards on the Milanese front during the League of Augsburg war... Does it interest you ? That info is from "The Spanish Army on the league of Augburg war" by Giancarlo Boeri
Cheers

Chema, would these be actual Wurttemberg units loaned out or Spanish Army units with Wurttember in them?

Hi, as far as I know, they are native Wurttemberg cuirassiers and dragoons, along some more Imperial units sent to the Italian front to help the Spanish army of Milan to drive the French back.
If you are interested in those regiments, tell me and I'll post here the information or a pic from the book.
Cheers !

Careful Chema. By posting information or a picture directly from the book, it places them in the public domain, and without the author's permission violates his copyright.

Dan, This has always confused me. If for example, Robert Hall writes that Regiment xxx had blue coats and red cuffs, is it a violation of his copyright to post: "according to Hall. Regiment xxx had blue coats with red cuffs?" Likewise, is it a violation to say that "according to Hall Regiment xxx was in Italy in 1692?" While the infomation comes from his book, the information originated from some other source (which he very helpfully usually cites in the text). I know that posting a page or long passages would be violations.

Dannie, No, but posting a copy of the exact text or an illustration or plate would be.

Attributed quotes are either okay or the whole of academia is in breach!

In reality it is a questioning of balancing the rights of the author with the needs of researchers, i.e. fair use or dealing. In the US, use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

For UK law, under Section 29(1) of the 1988 Act, fair dealing is a valid defence when dealing with copyright infringement for the purpose of non-commercial research or private study. The sniff test is whether the copying is for personal or commercial use.

So under both US and UK law I don't believe there should be an issue with reproducing limited amounts of attributed material for our research into uniforms etc.

However, this is Barry's site and he may wish to impose tighter controls. PMs being the safest option

Hi,
as you seem to be infected by the same bug as me with my Saxons you may have a look in the NYPL Gallery for pictures of Wurttemberg Troops from 1625-1900:

Hope that helps.

"Sort your filth out by yourself!" The King of Saxony Friedrich August III., at his abdication 1918, referred to the quarrels in the parliament and the squabbling within the provisional government.
