helmets for pikemen

Post by profjohn » Tue May 10, 2016 10:14 pm

G'day from Sydney, this is my first post on this forum and I'm just planning a foray into this period using Pendraken's new range. I'm thinking about armies for the Boyne and Sedgemoor and a small Scanian war adventure. Anyway here is the question. My sense is that by the 1680s helmets for pikemen had largely disappeared - I may be wrong. However, the Pendraken helmeted pikemen look really good and I quite fancy a couple of units which include them. What is the collective wisdom on that? I'm not obsessive about detail but, on the other hand, I do like reasonably authentic uniforms and kit.

The likelihood is that helmets were disappearing by the later 1680s, but at a stretch you can include them in German and Swiss regiments in the French army which were among the last to give them up. Outside of France a morrion type helmet was more likely in pikemen that had helmets, but again they are very much dying out.
