Battle of Glenshiel - Swiss ?

Good to see some interest and publicity about the 300th Anniversary of Glenshiel (even from the BBC !).

Looking at the background to this campaign, I have seen occasional references to Swiss troops on the Government side:

https://her.highland.gov.uk/monument/MHG7457

My understanding was that the only foreign troops on the field were 300 Spanish from Regiment Galicia on the Jacobite side and the Dutch Regiment Infanterie van Huffel opposing them. No Swiss.

Perhaps a few individuals ? ...unless there is some new information out there (which would be interesting).

Phil,

According to Het Staatse Leger, Vol IX, Page 645, there were 5 battalions of Dutch Swiss sent to England in 1715. Among them was a Regiment van Hunningen, which might be the regiment you are looking for.
Hope this helps.

Phil,
Sorry. Made a mistake. Huffel was a Dutch National regiment. The Swiss regiment was Sturler of 2 battalions. Apologize for any confusion.

Thank you Dan,

Looking at 'For Orange and the States' published by Helion together with the 'Dutch Regiments' website, it appears that the following Swiss Regiments (in Dutch service) were stationed in England in 1715:

Schmid de Grüneck
van Huningen
Sturler
de Chambrier

My understanding is that they would have been sent home once the Rising had been defeated.

For the 1719 Rising, as you say, the only Swiss Regiment mentioned is Sturler. As they are not mentioned in the Order of Battle for Glenshiel, I assume they were deployed elsewhere.

Thank you again,

Phil

Phil,
I believe Sturler was designated garrison in Edinburgh according to Het Staatse Leger. In 1715 there were 6 Dutch National battalions and 5 Dutch Swiss sent to England according to HSL. I can provide the names if you are interested.

Thank you - I must admit that I have seen the book advertised and its on the wishlist....

Helion are now putting out so much stuff that I want to buy that the wishlist far outstrips affordability ! Going to have to revisit my strategy of relying on a lottery win...

Really nice to see so many books coming out covering the late C17th/early C18th as this used to be a bit of a dead zone. Its also great to have input from non-British authors covering some new aspects of the era but in the only language I can understand...

yes Helion bringing out great books for my favourite period, but have noticed that a couple of the translations a little awkward to read. there a couple of sellers on Ebay UK that have Helion books for sale at reduced prices also check out Naval & Military Press website as Helion books appear there too

cheers Old John

Four companies of Amarongen's Swiss regiment took the field at Glenshiel.
