Confusion over a couple of the Sun King's Regiments

Post by Captain of Dragoons » Thu Mar 22, 2007 9:08 pm

Hello Gents,

I'm currently working on a personal project. I'm doing up a word doc on the French Regiments of Infantry during the reign of Louis XIV. I'm getting most of my infomation from www. drapeaux.org, a very nice french lanaguge site.

I'm organizing the Regiments by date formed and what their lineage were under The 'Sun King'. Not when they were reorg during the revolution and Napoleon. I am adding what their colonels and regiment colours were at the time of Louis death. I also hope to list battles and major actions each of these Regiments fought in during Louis rule.

There is some confusion over a couple of regiments. 1) Regiment de Trainel (called by this name in 1742 and later became Regiment de Beaujolais in 1768. Not to be confused with another Regiment de Beaujolais that exsited during Louis reign from 1689 to 1749).
As below Regiment de Trainel was formed from 'Milices du Languedoc'. Does anybody know what this regiment was named during our period 1660-1721?

Note there was another regiment during this time called Regiment de Languedoc but it is a different unit altogether.

FROM www.drapeaux.org
1674 : Création à partir des Milices du Languedoc
1742 : Régiment de Traisnel
1749 : Renforcé par incorporation du Régiment de Beaujolais
1757 : Régiment de Brancas
1758 : Régiment de Durfort
1761 : Régiment de Lastic
1762 : Régiment de Beaujolais
1765 : Régiment de Lamballe
1768 : Régiment de Beaujolais
1791 : 74ème Régiment d'Infanterie de Ligne
1793 : Réformé : 2nd Bataillon => 138ème Demi-Brigade d'Infanterie de Bataille
1796 : Réformé : 1er Bataillon => 70ème Demi-Brigade d'Infanterie de Ligne
Régiments homonymes :
De 1685 à 1749 : un premier régiment porte le titre Régiment de Beaujolais

2)Regiment de Mirabeau (same thing with this regiment)

As you can see below this regiment was formed in 1674 and became Regiment de Mirabeau in 1697. It looks like it changed names in 1711 four years before Louis died. In 1734 in was named de Durfort-Duras.
Any ideas what it's name was from 1711-15?

FROM www.drapeaux.org
1674 : Création : Régiment d'Albret
1679 : Régiment de Clérambaut
1697 : Régiment de Mirabeau
1711 : Régiment de ?
1734 : Régiment de Durfort-Duras
1743 : Régiment de Brissac
1749 : Régiment de Cossé-Brissac
1749 : Renforcé par incorporation du Régiment de Vivarais
1759 : Régiment de Lemps
1761 : Régiment de Puységur
1762 : Régiment de Vivarais

1793 : Réformé : 1er Bataillon => 131ème Demi-Brigade d'Infanterie de Bataille
2nd Bataillon => 132ème Demi-Brigade d'Infanterie de Bataille

Hello Edward;

According to Susane, Traisnel originated as Schomberg. Then you have the following:

1684 - Larray
1691 - Maulevrier
1706 - du Fort
1711 - Lyonne

Again, according to Susane, Mirabeau took the name Gensac in 1711.

I hope this helps.
