Gents,

I have gone through the English language sources that I have access to, here in the States, but am curious about French, Dutch, and German sources which may contain picture, drawings, or blueprints (well, diagrams) of artillery pieces of the NYW/WSS/GNW periods.

If any of you know of free, internet sources, that would be ideal, but if you know of expensive, hard to find, but also possible to acquire texts with this information, then I suppose I can deal with that too! :)

@Churchill, I do have that picture you have posted here before, do you have any others?

Thanks in advance!

Justin

@Motorway

Thank you! Great book, thank you for the link.

@ Churchill,

Nice photo...too bad they are right in front of the gun. :)

Interesting to see the crew dominated by women...

Justin,

This is a re-enactment group that follows Colonel Holcroft Blood's artillery.
http://www.holcroftbloods.co.uk/index.htm
Apparently this is only a 3 pounder, but note the size of the carriage/frame.
Can you imagine pushing this around on a battlefield and no way could this keep up with marching infantry and this is why to my mind that there were no such thing as battalion guns for our period, just light artillery.
The photo does show women, but this is probably due to the membership of the group (family & friends), although during the period civillian labour would have been used especially within the artillery train.
At Blenheim 1704 it is recorded that Blood was able to move some of his artillery, but this was probably only his light guns with the help of horse teams.

Cheers,

Ray.

Here is a picture of what is said to be a French 3 lbr from the WSS.

.

If all the 3 lbrs were this size then I would imagine that they would would be man handleable on the battlefield.

Hi Pabblo41,

Might I suggest you take a look through the Link that Motorway has provided.
There is no way this is from the WSS period the gun and the carriage is just too small.
During the period the smallest French gun was the 4 pounder.
The gun in your photo looks like a SYW or Napoleonic battalion gun which would be able to move with infantry.
Light artillery in our period were still huge things to be maneuvered on the battlefield.

Regards,

Ray.

With all due respect - could you read what I said!_ I said it is was was "said" to be a gun from the WSS, as the source I got it from indicated that it was. Just because it does not confirm with what you think or know does not make it right or wrong. It might come from a source you are not aware of.

As it happens I thik it is actually a gun from the 7YW but I cannot prove it either way. I put it up to stimulate a debate and would like to hear from anyone who actually knows if it is actually a WSS or 7YW gun. There is a lot of information out there much of it not in English or accessable to the English speaking world, and it is arrogent of us to think that if it is not in English it does not exist or is correct.

There are army museums accross all of europe from Denmark to Italy, from England to Moscow. Most of them have guns of which nobody knows axactly to whome they belong
So keep looking or searching and you may find something

Pabblo41,

Well which source did you find the photo from??? I'm sure I and others would like to know.
One minute your saying it's from the WSS period or at least your saying "it is said" it's from the WSS and then your saying "it's from the SYW" so which is it???

Read the emails again  :x . If you dont understand it get someone who does to read it to you.
There are more pictures of the gun , and it came from someone in the USA who was on holiday (I think in Europe) and came across the gun at a Military Museum and whe he enquired about the gun was told it was from the WSS, which again is why I emphesized the word SAID! Because he was sure the gun was real but maybe not from the WSS period.

The gun exists and the pictures exist and they need explaining.

The bit about the 7YW is my view of what period the gun might come. Which IF YOU READ MY EMAIL, IS WHAT I SAID.

AS I SAID - READ WHAT IS IN FRONT OF YOU - IF YOU CANT. DONT COMMENT.

thank you for the support :) , and the interesting photo's and references. They may be (as you said) not from the WSS but they do highlight how much info is out there, also that the interest in military history, reinactment socities etc is universal and not just restricted to "the english speaking world".

Regards
