Reichskrieg - War along the Rhine

Post by Friedrich August I. » Wed Jan 22, 2014 8:04 am

Dear Friends,

I start here a new tread with the above theme, the War of the Holy Roman Empire against the French Kingdom. Any Help that can be offered will be thankfully received.
For me that will be the FIRST time in my w-h-o-l-e wagamers life that I do units from Austria   :D

The focus of this thread will be in the first part on the Reichsarmee under the Command of "Türkenlouis", nickname for Markgraf Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden-Baden.
Many of his soldiers fought alongside the Armies of the Maritime Powers like England, Denmark and the Dutch against the French invaders and Bavaria.

It is also a 'First Time' for me that I do Troops for the WSS so the second part will focus on Prinz Eugen von Savoyen, Fieldmarshall of Austria and, I believe, the only military Genius Austria ever had in its Ranks.

The part of the Reichsarmee I intend to do is as follows:

Forces under Graf Castell
lst Line: Feldmarschall-Lieutenant Prinz von Hannover

Wing: Generalwachtmeister Graf Thürheim
Styrum Dragoon Regiment (5) *
Hohenzollern Cuirassier Regiment (5)
Leibregiment (Saxon)(2)
Kurprinz (Saxon) Cavalry Regiment (2)
Jordan (Saxon) Cavalry Regiment (2)
Eichstädt (Saxon) Cavalry Regiment (2)

Infantry Right Wing: Feldmarschall-Lieutenant Schulenburg
Generalwachtmeister von Wostrumirsky
Königin (Saxon) Infantry Regiment (l)
Kurprinz (Saxon) Infantry Regiment (l)
Wackerbarth (Saxon) Infantry Regiment (l)
Wostrumirsky (Saxon) Infantry Regiment (l)
Thielau (Saxon) Infantry Regiment (l)
Sacken (Saxon) Infantry Regiment (l)

Infantry Middle Right: Feldmarschal-lieutenant Graf Erffa
Baden (Swabian) Infantry Regiment (2)
Erffa (Franconian) Infantry Regiment (2)

Infantry Middle Left: Feldmarschall-Lieutenant Durlach
Generalwachtmeister Horn
Schnebelin (Franconian) Infantry Regiment (2)
Durlach (Franconian) Infantry Regiment (2)

Infantry Left Wing:Feldmarschal-lieutenant von Anhalt
Generalwachtmeister von Natzmer
Kaunitz (Prussian) Infantry Regiment (2) *
Prinz Anhalt (Prussian) Infantry Regiment (2) *
Prinz Philipp (Prussian) Infantry Regiment (2) *

Wing: Generalwachtmeister Hohenzollern
Bayreuth Cavalry Regiment (5) *
Prinz Philipp (Prussian) Cavalry Regiment (3) *
Wartensleben (Prussian) Cavalry Regiment (3) *
Crassau (Prussian) Cavalry Regiment (2) *
Leibregiment (Prussian)(3) *

The obvious reason for choosing this force is the existance of Saxon Troops in their ranks which are already finished. They were part of the force Schulenburg lead to Austria for the fighting along the Rhine against Bavaria and France. After Schuster&Francke those units have been:

Kürassier Regiments (575 men each):
Leibregiment
Kurprinz
Jordan
Eichstaedt
Infantry Regiments (approx. 475 men each):
Königin
Kurprinz
Beichlingen
Thielau
Sacken
Wustromirsky
Plötz
2300 Horse and 3350 Foot(very weak) therefore formed into one Battalion each.

The units in the listed above marked with an *) have taken part in the Battle of Hochstaedt 1704.
The term "Prussian" is not quite correct as their ruler was the Prince Elector of Brandenburg and Prussia was only a part of his domain.
And here will be my next 'first time' as I never did any "Prussian" troops in my life as a wargamer :!: :D

Now the studies will beginn about Uniforms, flags and Miniatures to be used - I have Ebor and WFM in mind. Front Rank may be an option but can't tell right now :D .

Thanks for following.
All comments are welcome

Dear Friends,

The First Regiment of the list, the Styrum Dragoon Regiment, has been taken care off, Flags and Uniforms are sorted out and Miniatures are ordered from EBOR.

Cheers,

Günter

Ray,

Thank You I had those in mind for Bayreuth and Hohenzollern. At least the last ones should have worn the Cuirassier helmet like those of WLOA37b.
They are the next on my list as soon as I have more info about their flags.
Hohenzollern Cuirassiers are clear in terms of uniforms and Miniatures.

Cheers,
Günter

Hi Günther,

we have an Austrian Project called "Ancien Regime" which runs parallel to yours:

Warfare in the Wars between 1689 and 1720

http://www.diefestung.com/forum/thread. ... adid=58589

some sort of "who-is-who of Austria´s top wargamers" has already joined:

Andreas Hofer, Constable, Greymouse, Mthomas, Muswetyl, Nikfu, the Schlendriane etc. pp.

maybe you want to join the ranks of this Austrian Project ?

next time we meet at the Austrian Salute on March 15th in Oberndorf near Salzburg where we have a "Lily Banners"-demo game,

and there will be a "Lily Banners Day" in early September here in Oberndorf too

regards

Is it possible to post pictures in there so the boys get an idea how Armies in BlB look like?

My dear Fellow Austrian/Hallo Raif,

Not for me as I see in him a first class Opportunist.
Prince Eugene was Austrias most loyal servant with more far sightedness than Wallenstein.
Wallenstein had certainly his own class for the time being but if Gustaf Adolf had not died so early Wallenstein wouldn't have come so far.

My personal opinion of course.

Cheers/Grüsse

The only problem with Eugene is that he wasn't Austrian but French although he did serve the Austrians well once he joined them.

Well Dave,
Austria has a quite different view of him on that matter.
http://austria-forum.org/af/AEIOU/Eugen ... en_english
As he joined them at the age of 19 and had no military experience before because the French King denied him to get an Officers commission I say he did quite well. Ah, and many servants of Austria weren't native Austrians.
But I think that was very common in those times

Hi Günter !

Great News.
Anything I must know before joining?
Ruleset: Beneath the Lily Banners

Miniatures: mainly Front Rank, but also Musketeer and Northstar (all 28mm) - for providing an even-looking picture of units on the battlefield

Units:
3 stands á 6 Minis per battalion + 1 Stand of pikes (6) if historically justified
4 stands á 3 Minis per cavalry regiment
2 stands per artillery battery - 1 with the gun + 1 behind (the back-area)

photos ?

well:

Walter,

That was NOT what I ment  I played BlB twice now in 6 Battles.
I think to know therefore what is needed to play :D .

All my Infantry has 3 bases as they are only muskets,
My Horse Regiments are larger as they have 6 bases each but they can be cut down to 4 without problems. The guns have all 4 men each for esthetic reasons.
In terms of figures I have 700 Foot, 126 Horse and 11 guns(models)
In BlB scales 25.000 Foot, 5000 Horse, 33 Canon.

Those are the base for building more troops for different theaters of war.

Cheers,
Günter

Dear Friends,

Progress Report:
Flags ordered from Maverick for the following units:
Styrum, Kanitz, Anhalt, Philipp(inf), Bayreuth, Philipp(cav), Leibregiment.
Robert Hall Cd's from "On Military Matters", that will give flag and uniform detail
ARMIES OF MECKLENBURG & HOLSTEIN-GOTTORP 1650-1719
ARMY OF THE ELECTORATE PALATINE 1690-1716
FLAGS & UNIFORMS HESSE-DARMSTRADT & UPPER RHINE
FLAGS & UNIFORMS OF THE ARMY OF HESSE-KASSELL
MILITARY UNIFORMS OF THE ELECTORATE OF COLOGNE
UNIFORMS AND FLAGS OF THE DUTCH ARMY AND THE ARMY OF LIEGE 1685-1715
UNIFORMS AND FLAGS OF THE IMPERIAL AUSTRIAN ARMY 1683-1720

Thank You Ray for your support in this matter. As it can be seen, the flags ordered are matching with those units who were present at Hochstaedt 1704 to fight alongside the Duke :D

Thanks for following, all kind of comments are welcome!

Cheers,
Günter
