Re: The Dutch Blue Guard and a Papal Banner..

I did some asking about the painting in Nothern Ireland and at the NI parliament but I am still waiting for an answer. As far as I know know it's not even sure if William is depicted on the painting!

Re: Dutch Inf Uniform WSS oops.

Hi Paul, The Dutch Infantry regiment Nassau-Walen at one time was dressed in the colour scheme you mention. Another 'pink' unit was cavalry regiment Waldeck. Schematic uniforms and flags in the link below. Cheers, Mats http://www.mightandreason.fr/articles-historiques/73-armees/58-armee-pu-stephane

Re: Dutch flags

Addendum: Yesterday, my friend Motorway had some correspondence with Mr. Jean Belaubre (IMO THE authority on the period) about the reliability of Robitscheck's plates. In short: the flags are fantasy, but the uniform details are reliable. Sorry Ray. 8)

Re: Dutch flags

@Ray: I would love to see them :D @Maciek: The plates Robitscheck drew depict the Staten army in 1672-1675. The plates were ordered by the millionaire De Ridder, who hired artists abroad to draw pictures of the different armies of 'our' period after contemporary drawings and documents in local archi...

Here's the complete version Ray. Mind you: this is a copy of a copy from an unverified source (Robitscheck).

Re: Dutch flags

The suggestion has been made by Dr. de Wilde in the 1970's. We know from some documents in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris that Nassau-Friesland carried yellow-blue colours in the 1670's. We are now trying to establish a sound verdict, based on primary sources.

Re: Dutch flags

Because this pattern was attributed to this regiment by Sapherson in his famous booklet. BTW, am I right that correct Nassau Friesland flag is like in attachement ? Maciek, Indeed, this is a very sketchy representation of one of the Nassau-Friesland (1st battalion) colours lost at Fleurus in 1690 (...

Re: Dutch flags

Cna I ask if the Dutch Footguards carried 2 'regimental' colours with the 2nd and subsequent battalions? Theo, Possibly: yes. At the moment, Motorway and myself are analysing the colours system used by the only other Dutch multi-battalion (elite) regiment at the time, Nassau-Friesland. Based on the...

Re: Where is WARFARE range going next?

Not sure about the Dutch : I can't recall reading anything about United Provinces cavalry wearing breastplates but Mats and Motorway are more qualified than I am to answer that question anyway.
Dutch cavalry did not wear breastplates during this period. They were reintroduced in March 1707.

Re: Dutch and German flags sources?

IMHO the 'third source' (as Motorway puts it) is the most exciting one at this point. Due to our digital and multilangual abilities we are able to (re)discover and (re)interpret primary and secondary sources (partially handed over to us by such phenomenal researchers as De Wilde and Belaubre). My pr...

Re: Jacobite units??

I tend to trust Mats and Rebel because I think both have had access to primary sources... 1,931 Guardsmen were present at the Boyne according to: Les armées qui combattirent Louis XIV: 5 les Provinces Unies 4 infanterie… - Dr. F.G. de Wilde (Leiden, 1971) Afstammingen en Voortzettingen der Infanter...
