Here is a photo of the later Sir Stephen Hawkins Regiment as I pictured it:

I believe that we may have reached the conclusion of our second battle in this mini-campaign. To see the latest, go to:

Re: How I paint horses

Not so much a comment on how to paint horses but rather a comment on the philosophy of painting cavalry figures. For me, I want the focus on the RIDER, not the horse. The rider is what we should be paying attention . . . and the horse should not distract us from the rider. Note that this philosophy ...

Alternate VWQ Figure Basing

Those of you who might have looked in on my "The Alpian Wars" mini-campaign might have noticed that my Pike & Shot units have a different number of figures per stand than what Clarence calls for: http://alpianwars.blogspot.ca/ Yes, I know that I'm using the rules for 16th rather than 17th century, b...

Re: Using VWQ for 16th century games

Bob, What problems did you encounter? And how did you rule on them? Also what size game did you have? How many units and how many players? Quite a while back we had a four-person game and I designed the "unit cards" to activate two units on the same side . . . one for each player. Sometimes it was t...

Re: Mini-Campaigns & Games via Email

Rob, We're moving a bit slower than normal right now because of Christmas. One of my generals has a house full of relatives and the other and myself just have a lot of Holiday commitments. Besides my "Alpian Wars" blog; there is a thread here on LOA concerning the mini-campaign: http://www.leagueofa...

Mini-Campaigns & Games via Email

The various Charles Grant "Scenario" Books are a great resource for the type of military actions that often took place. They are (for the most part) NOT "even battles" . . . but both sides have a chance to accomplish their goals. A while back I challenged members of the "Emperor vs Elector" group bl...

Re: Using VWQ for 16th century games

We are now in the early phases of our second game in this 16th century VWQ mini-campaign using a pair of Imagi-Nations. The on-going blog covering the action can be read here: http://alpianduchy.blogspot.ca/ I have made a few adjustments to the rules: Both armies have "Swordsman" units. Since "Foot"...

Using VWQ for 16th century games

I have just started a semi-solo VWQ game using Imagi-Nations (fictional countries) and set in the 16th century . . . because I have appropriately based troops for that period and none for the ECW. I say semi-solo because I've got a couple of games (one in Nova Scotia and one in British Columbia) ema...

There were a total of 24 cards in the deck. The "unit" cards each actually prompted two units (one for each player on same side):
  • 12 Unit cards
    8 Officer cards
    1 Artillery card
    1 Reload card
    1 Event card
1 Turn Over / Take Photos card

I should point out that I DO like card-driven games. Part of Murdock's problem was that he had two commands, each of which was a mix of cavalry and infantry . . . and he had two fords to cross (halving his column movement). Rather than leaving them open to any unit, he blocked both fords with his in...

Murdock (my friend who doesn't like the rules), has posted photos and an account of our recent (September 19, 2010) game: http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.com/2010/09/truly-vile-battle-at-jeffs-last-sunday.html His son, Alex, had a great time and liked the rules; but due to some poor choices on his...
