Re: Polish infantry of the GNW

I am working on a Polish army after taking part in this game - http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/resources/images/Gallery/GNW/KliszowSheffield.htm I am asked about the infantry and you can forget the 'Polish Guard' unit. This is a unit of the Saxon army - like the Swiss Guards or Irish units in the French ...

Re: Danish Foot at Aughrim

Friedrich August I. wrote: Here is what I was mentioning, First Infantry Line right most unit "Denikoff..."

I came across this unit as well and asked my friend about it, I found out it is Polish. It is the 'Gwardii Krolewski' (King's or royal Guard) regiment under the command of Denhoff.

I hope this helps.

Re: Blenheim OOB

The 18 battalions of Prussians and Danes that were in Eugene's wing at Blenheim were all in British/Dutch pay and in Marlborough's army in 1703 & indeed up until the battle. The battalions/squadrons under Goor were also technically part of the British/Dutch army and were paid by them. But they had b...

Re: English regiments in Spain, 1703-1711

I am building armies for Spain and I asked my friend about the British blue coats - he knows a lot about it. He doesn't know for sure as he doesn't know what the source was used by the booklet. But he strongly suspects the booklet has misunderstood the source. There is a Dutch unit called Palm's/Lee...

Re: Reichsarmee Markgrave of Baden 1703

You probably have the information already but there is a good series of articles on the 1702-03 campaigns in and around Bavaria. They were in the Pike and Shot society (a 'must join' organisation if you are interested in this period) magazine 'Arquebusier'. http://www.pikeandshotsociety.org/ It has ...

Re: Blenheim OOB

Friedrich August I/Gunter, The Imperial infantry at Blenheim were actual part of Marlborough's army and lent to Eugene for the battle. All the actual Imperialist infantry was either with Baden or in garrison/other duties. The Saxons had fought in this area in earlier campaigns but they went home in ...

Re: Child's book on British Army in the 9YW republished

Ray: If you don't mind and also in light of Barry's post I will leave discussion of what the French are doing. There is in any case a lot information on them and I think other discussions. On the Dutch - thanks for that information Motorway. Does Bartels book say what tactics they were using during...

Re: Child's book on British Army in the 9YW republished

Ray, The short answer to your questions is we don't seem to know. Indeed that was the point of my post - my friend and I have been trying to find answers to those questions for some time and I was hoping this book might have some answers. But know seems to know exactly when the change happened nor w...

Re: Child's book on British Army in the 9YW republished

AFAIK Nosworthy is not intending to extend the coverage of his work, just correct the various errors in the old book. But maybe it will look in more detail at the earlier period. Hopefully it will be a fresh look at the WSS/SYW period it hasn't really been looked at since Chandler in the 50's/60's. ...

Rohan: Thank a lot for taking the time to reply and so comprehensively. I will probably get round to getting this book at some point in the future. I have some of Child's other books and they are good as you say. My interest is mainly in the WSS. A friend of mine has been looking for a long time fo...

Re: When did the Polish discard their axes?

My mate says that they didn't go for certain until 1717 - there was a big reorganization then. But they were probably gone before this. They had them at the start of the Ottoman war in the 1680's but may have started getting rid of them during the later stages of this war. Nothing is really known ab...

Re: Klissow (1702) Refight

Roger: I guess most strong defensive positions from this time are similar - high ground with water/marsh in front of it and the flanks covered. Details obviously vary but I think that this is quite common. But what I thought was good about this battle was the opportunity for both sides to attack, us...

Great information and well timed - I am painting a 'British' army for Spain at the moment :)

I would be interested in your scans and indeed any more pictures you have.

Thanks
